The Psychology of Writing and the Cognitive Science of the Perfect Daily Routine - 1 views

  •
by Maria Popova How to sculpt an environment that optimizes creative flow and summons relevant knowledge from your long-term memory through the right retrieval cues. Reflecting on the ritualization of creativity, Bukowski famously scoffed that "air and light and time and space have nothing to do with." Kinda cool article to help organize students and linked to psychology.

BPS Research Digest - 1 views

This site will help you keep up-to-date with the latest psychology research. You could find some experimental studies that can be replicated, but that's not so easy and you might have to do quite a lot of searching.

For some reason I think this didn't work the first time! This website is The British Psychological Society's blog. It is called "Research Digest: Blogging on brain and behaviour", and it reports on current research papers. As a sample of their attention-grabbing research posts, there are such titles as "The Psychology of Facebook, Digested" (Social Anxiety) and "10 Hellish Psychology Studies You'll Be Glad Not To Have Participated In" (Research Ethics). It seems like a great site to spark student interest into a variety of relevant research topics in a "digestible" way.

One of the first websites I came across when looking for resources; Haven't stopped using it since. Perfect for practicing to write research summaries!

A website the serves as an overview of the general theories and concepts of psychology. This is better as a reference rather than a source of answers.

    Great resource!
  •
This website gives a great overview of many of the most important fields, methods, perspectives, psychologists, and studies in Psychology. It is intended for students writing their A-level Psychology, and is thus an excellent introductory website for anyone who is new to Psychology or is refreshing his or her memory.
  •
I find Simply Psychology for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is accessible language. But it has some studies that are reported in enough detail to be replicated, a reference to the original publication, and links to terrific outside documents which are often the original publication. It takes some clicking around to find studies, but well worth it.
  •
This site offers a more scientific read. The knowledge is put forth straight forwardly and makes for interesting reading of theories, concepts and scientific inquiry put forth. I use it to encourage psychological vocabulary too.
  •
This site breaks down various psychological concepts into organized information and is simple to understand.

Why students using laptops learn less in class even when they really are taking notes -... - 7 views

This really wasn't for the workshop. I just decided I was going to use this in a discussion with my students. I thought I'd share.

I personally still asked my students to have a book to write down their notes by hand. Mostly to avoid the distraction of using laptop. Good to know that there's more good in doing so. Thanks for sharing.
  •
This could actually be a study that students can replicate; I tried to find the original article, but my data base access does not have it; here is the abstract: http://pss.sagepub.com/content/25/6/1159
  •
Hi Marcus, I start the year off with note taking and get students to research the research on using technology over hand written notes. One of my students last year used Cunningham and Stanovich's study for their IA which was titled 'is the pen mightier than the keyboard'? I like this one, something new:0), Best regards, Yvette

Everyday Psychology - 0 views

  •
Here's the back story: a famous, well-respected psychologist writes a hugely complex journal article and then gives an interview to TIME Healthland online. The interview is as confusing as the journal article, and great controversy ensues in the profession. Are people being mislead and confused? Are they being harmed?

Our Brain Sees Known Words As Pictures - 1 views

  •
Given the fact that writing is a relatively recent invention, scientists are keen to understand how we read and recognize words as our brains cannot have evolved a dedicated mechanism for reading. Clues about these abilities started to be unraveled a few years back when scientists discovered a part of the brain that was activated upon reading, but interestingly, its response seemed to be strictly visual.

    Unethical Psychological Experiments
  •
I have used this site with my AP classes. Some are quite disturbing!
  •
In looking at ethics in psychology, I think it's important to look at the unethical side and implications, for students to really understand the consequences and repercussions of following unethical procedures... Site write-up: Humans Psychology is a relatively new science which gained popularity in the early 20th century with Wilhelm Wundt. In the zeal to learn about the human thought process and behavior, many early psychiatrists went too far with their experimentations, leading to stringent ethics codes and standards.
