Internet World Maps - 1 views

    I'm taking this week's idea of "domains" a bit literally. Here's a quick blog post from Amit Agarwal (tech columnist for Wall Street Journal India). It links to several visualizations of internet activity. Some are physical: electricity; some are political (i.e. explicitly - all these maps are political!): censorship by country; some are social: use of SNS by country, the first edition of the xckd map of internet communities.* He offers these maps without much commentary. I'm interested in how these visual representations could help us think about the "where" of digital ethnography. My offline/physical context may be a coffee shop in Eugene, OR, am I also placed on these maps? What kinds of maps help you think about the "where" of the internet? * The second edition is worth looking at to think about the way time and technological development shapes our understanding of space.

    Here's a link to the second version of the xckd map of internet communities. https://xkcd.com/802/ While not a "real" map, I often use it in presentations to explain the idea that online communities are particular and exist in relation to each other. I often pair it with the concept of "fractalized communities" found in Patrica Lange's work in youtube video bloggers. Both get at the specificity of online research; there isn't one internet that I can study - I can only tell you about my time in this particular community.

    I haven't been able to find a free online copy of this yet. It looks very helpful. Has anyone else been able to secure one? The title reminds me of Patrica Lange's piece on YouTube and "publicly private" and "privately pubic" online spaces. Her application of the idea of "fractalized communities" has been very useful to my research on out-of-the-way online communities.     Interesting how this intersects with Meta-Nerd's idea of "scenes." The video is interesting - it plays without sound, and provides very little context (sns platforms, time scales, etc). For me, this made the video less a visualization of data than a weird, undulating monster (or earthquake? Why am I using negative metaphors?). Without the context, it veers away from a piece that will make an argument about the role of social media "in today's society." I appreciate that, even as I want to critique the video for not providing the promised "participatory practices in urban spaces, for decision-making, policy-making and urban planning and design."

    This is quite fascinating! The notion of mapping conversations on social networks with /place/ opens many pathways to exploration and innovation. I wonder if the 3D visualization software will be released to the open source community.

    I think this article is really spot on in providing an important model for empirically studying and representing the spread of ideas (or controversies) between media and how participatory and professional media influence one another. The fact that this article is written as much for academics as for activists is also exciting (and scary) to me, as a means of thinking about agenda-setting and influence. How might access to these tools help activist campaigns, and how might they swing back to challenge them? How can you really measure effect? "Even when we are able to access the data we need for analysis, interpretation is complicated by the specificity of individualized media experiences, where we've each curated our own individualized lists of sources on platforms like Twitter and Facebook. This can leave us with very different understandings of the day's news. Is it possible to speak meaningfully about a media agenda when agendas are set by individuals following a combination of friends and professional sources they've chosen to meet personal preferences and needs?"

    Was Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer actions malicious or do you feel he was only trying to get AT&T's attention for their own mistake? Should he be prosecuted for his actions?

    That's an odd one, and really highlights the different notions of public and private spaces online. He went to some effort to get that information, so my kneejerk reaction is to say that what he did was wrong and that he should be prosecuted for it. It would certainly be unethical for an ethnographer to gather data that way, but should it be illegal? EFF calls those pages public, but I think "public" web pages are more like "public" spaces in a private building. He was clearly on their corporate premises, trying to sneak into hidden areas-he had to bombard the site with fake device IDs to get to them, and built a tool to do so. It may not be akin to breaking and entering, but what constitutes trespassing in a digital realm? If a physical office kept records in unlocked closets, would it be illegal to check all the doors in the waiting room, and take pictures when one opened? Or would we be up in arms about that office's recordkeeping practices? Ultimately, the main outcome I'd have hoped for would be requirements for corporations like AT&T to revise their security practices. What Auernheimer did was wildly unethical and without even the veneer of true white hat hacking, but I have no idea what to do with him.

BBC News - A 13-year-old eagle huntress in Mongolia - 0 views

    Great example of using digital tools to conduct ethnography. Notice that not only does the photographer/travel writer show his pictures to the source community on his laptop, but he's staged a photo of that. The documentarist's relationship with his subjects becomes part of the story selected by the BBC writer for our consumption. I've been trying to puzzle out why that is. Does today's BBC readership want or expect reassurance of ethical cultural fieldwork? Does that picture demystify our exotic "13-year-old eagle huntress," or does it reinforce a contrast between the modern and the traditional in Mongolia? I'd be very interested in your thoughts.

    I think--looking at both articles--that it reinforces the "us" and "them" quality of the work. The idea that the US has that says, "Duh, girls can totally do that too" against the extraordinary existence of a huntress. --I was briefly skimming over the comments in other article and noticed this gem... "I raised my son and daughter on a ranch in Wyoming, USA, and I remember once when a Mongolian diplomat came to their "sister country" Wyoming to visit. I took my 9 year old daughter and he talked to her through a translator about horse races and archery. She was enthralled, since she'd been riding horses nearly since she was old enough to walk. Your story of the eagle hunters, and the young girl and her father, is very powerful." ...which I think illustrates the point. The way this girl's mother talks about "horse races and archery" like they are a totally foreign concept added the fact that she felt the need to add the bit about talking through a translator.

    I've been reading this book and it has a bunch of stuff related to conducting ethnography in virtual spaces. The editor proposes the idea of cyber-social-scientific knowledge to get at the internet as both a cultural artefact and cultural context. Chapters 6 and 10 seem particularly relevant to discussions of digital ethnography.

Transcription in Action (Two Tools) - 0 views

    TiA comes from the UCSB linguistics department, and is two tools. "VoiceWalker" is a transcription tool that "walks" through the transcription, that is, it repeats a segment of the transcription a certain number of times before moving on to the next segment. This prevents the constant stopping and starting that one has to do. The second tool is "SoundWriter" and it is still in Beta test form. The idea is that when you click on a section of the transcription, you'll be able to hear the original audio, so you can hear someones intonation.

I thought this might be useful to anybody who found our discussion on "lurkers", ethics, and the gaming world interesting. TL Taylor is a world-renowned video game researcher, who spends a majority of her investigations viewing the interactions within a digital world. She researches topics like: how players choose to represent themselves in contrast to their physical appearance in reality, and even going so far as to see how and why relationships occur in a video game setting that are strong enough to get players to marry each other without ever meeting in person.

    Just to piggy-back off of my last post - I read this piece by Eve Tuck recently and I think it's really powerful. In her letter, Tuck calls on communities, researchers to reconsider the long-term impact of "damage-centered research" - research that seeks to document peoples' pain and brokenness to hold those in power accountable for their oppression." Speaking to Witness' approach, this quote was particularly salient: "It is a powerful idea to think of all of us as litigators, putting the world on trial, but does it actually work? Do the material and political wins come through? And, most importantly, are the wins worth the long- term costs of thinking of ourselves as damaged?"
