"Nowadays, kids want to use smartphones. Of course, most parents aren't willing to actually buy their kids a device, but plenty have no problem letting them play with one. A free open online course for primary school teachers to help prepare them for the implementation of the new digital technologies curriculum in Australia which will have compulsory computational thinking & coding from K-8. Started March 24. Register to join.

"Digital Citizenship is a timely and much-needed response to California and federal mandates. The California School Library Association (CSLA) sponsors this online course for educators and their K-12 students. Lead developer is Dr. Lesley Farmer."

There are around 40 'modules' in this online course - many of the topics are relevant to teacher and student learning.

This online course has 3 approaches including the 'Extended Student' (no credit, no fees) opportunity. Led by Jason Ohler, who I was delighted to meet at ISTE last year, the goal of this course is ' to develop the skills and perspectives necessary to be able to interact in this new community in ways that help the community flourish in healthy, creative ways.' And many pundits and legislators are now calling for more stringent laws around cyberbullying and online harassment. Bullying is, of course, nothing new although undoubtedly, the Internet has changed the speed and the breadth with which cruel behaviors, comments, photos, and videos can be spread. And it has extended the persistence of this information as well."

"In Digital Age, Learning Civics Means Doing Civics Traditional civic education has required students to memorize basic facts about American government, call it the what, who, and when model for civic literacy. The primary source of information has been textbooks, a source of literacy that has not always been the most accurate or inclusive. And while books (in various forms) will certainly continue to play a role in civic education emerging digital media platforms will be key in the effort to engage, invigorate, and create an informed citizenry. The rise of digital media offers a unique opportunity to add a more experiential dimension to civic education. Digital technologies can, of course, be used to teach kids basic civic facts, but they can also serve as an entry point into "doing" civics. This happened in a Minneapolis third grade class I visited earlier this year. "

Interesting results that may be indicative of some changes. Still dominated by the use of PPT and Word. Still not using Web 2.0 and collaborative online learning environments to full extent (of course).

Teaching digital citizenship and keeping students in the classroom safe online (and off of course!) is a priority for teachers when using iPads, Google Apps, and other devices & websites in the classroom. While even the best laid digital citizenship plans can lay the foundation, teachers need to continue revisiting topics and guiding students all year.
