"Victoria police Staff Sgt. Darren Laur said he's always surprised at who adds him as a Facebook friend. His more than 2,000 "friends," mostly teens, think he's a 15-year-old girl they have never met, not a 46-year-old cop looking to make an example out of them. Laur said he's trying to teach kids that by opening up their social networking sites to strangers, they're potentially giving away personal information such as phone numbers, addresses, emails and friends' names, which could be dangerous in the wrong hands."

Teens share a wide range of information about themselves on social media sites;1 indeed the sites themselves are designed to encourage the sharing of information and the expansion of networks. However, few teens embrace a fully public approach to social media. Instead, they take an array of steps to restrict and prune their profiles, and their patterns of reputation management on social media vary greatly according to their gender and network size. Chat and social networking are great ways to stay in touch and find new friends. However, there are some risks meeting people online-especially if you don't know them in real life.

The concepts of digital citizenship and citizenship 2.0 are particularly relevant in the context of globalisation and the knowledge economy. The most recent technology standards for students published by ISTE enshrine a major category for digital citizenship (ISTE, 2007). "Digital citizenship" is now being dubbed as "citizen 2.0" and in the simplest terms it refers to the ability to participate in society online and to use technology appropriately. Digital citizenship represents capacity, belonging, and the potential for political and economic engagement in society in the information age (O‟Brien, 2008). Digital citizens practice conscientious use of technology, demonstrate responsible use of information, and maintain a positive attitude to learning with technology (ISTE 2007 cited in Richards, 2010). The affordances of the recent raft of web 2.0 technologies - sharing, collaborating, networking, customising and personalization enable new forms of civic participation which are changing existing social relations (Punie & Cabrera, 2006). Social communication technologies offer new channels for political engagement, contacting officials, and discussing issues. The network effects or benefits of bringing people together online exceed the satisfaction gained by individual participants - creating what economists call "positive externalities" or spill over benefits.

PLNs or Personal Learning Networks are one of the lifelong learning strategies that are enhanced through the internet. Will Richardson is a well-known commentator on digital education and this short clip and blog entry are a useful resource for talking with students about developing a PLN.

"The most obvious is that social networks are simply tools: when used for activities of which we approve - like riot cleanup, or the Arab spring - their power seems unambiguously positive. When used for other causes, it is portrayed as sinister. There's no way to embrace the immense good such tools can use without learning to live with, and mitigate, their downsides."

The ugly side of social networking.

Social networking communities are here to stay. Facebook has over 500 million users, while Twitter has over 200 million. That's not even counting blogs or YouTube video blogs. There's no doubt that students are actively engaged in online communities, but what kind of effects are these sites having and how can parents counteract the bad and bolster the positive?

The K-pop band's dedicated supporters have long used social media to break music records. Now, they're using their global network for social issues, even successfully raising $1 million for the Black Lives Matter movement.
