Another option, similar to Popplet that can work as an online visual bulletin board for students to gather inspiration from. Pintrest might work better as they can add to their own board and also search within other people's pin boards to pull ideas from.

One of the project ideas I came across on the BIE website. The exploration of biomes works well with our ecosystems unit.

Students can use these to collaborate within and between groups on their ideas for the mural. They can also add links to various murals they find inspiring and write about why that is. They can also work together using Google Docs to create a presentation of their idea for school administrators when they are ready for that step.

This article from the Journal of STEM Education presents teachers (who don't normally experience what is like to work in fields outside of education) who took part in externships in STEM jobs so they could learn for themselves exactly the types of scenarios their students might encounter. The results drove authenticity in their PBL teaching. I think it's important for teachers to truly understand these demands, and not just read about them. If we provide these contextualized environments for our students because we believe it's best for their learning, why don't we work toward providing those same experiences for ourselves? I always find it helpful to watch instruction in action as I am trying to understand how the process works. The Teaching Channel has 16 videos on its site which are tagged as PBL. They cover a variety of topics.

At King Middle School and Casco Bay High School, in Portland, Maine, every student works in a widely hailed project-learning method called expeditionary learning. Discover what your school can learn.

The students will work in groups to create a Multimedia Presentation that informs an authentic audience as well as the class about civil rights figures, their speeches/quotes and how these leaders have impacted their life today. Each group will choose different civil rights leaders as their focus.

The students will recognize how people make a difference in the world by researching the volunteer work of others and showing others what they have learned.
