Definitely a common thing I've seen in the fitness industry. People can sometimes get so wrapped up in trying to be lean and fit that they go about it in the wrong ways. They literally workout to the point of exhaustion and then barely refuel their bodies with the necessary nutrients. Which causes more harm than good.
  •
Eating disorders are a tragedy, and a sickness. It is definitely evident in this country, more so than where I come form in Canada, as image is more important in America according to studies, appearance can take someone further than education, which is truly sad. Which leads to more people being self conscious, and more eating disorders.
  •
Eating disorders affect a great deal of American teenagers and young adults, and a big reason is because society sets standards as to what a male or female's ideal body should look like. Rather than trying to live up to society's standards, people should try to live up to a standard of health for their own bodies.
  •
This social issue has been around for many years and it is still a huge issue in the world. I like this article due to the fact that it gives you information on the disorders such as treatments, signs and statistics. All people should be educated on the subject.
  •
I think that this situation is sort of a "hush hush" situation so I think it is great that people are talking out about it. If more people talk about it, then maybe people that are suffering from situations like this can be open about it and about getting help. I also think that people opening up about it, will open up societies eyes and realize that people are suffering from this mostly because of the pressure people have to look how society wants.
  •
People are so wrapped up on having the perfect body that they fail to realize their hurting themselves. Eating disorders are very tragic, but are also very common these days. We start to think that just because one plan worked for someone else it will work for everyone. The truth is, everyone's body is different and reacts differently too.

Religion and prayer in U.S. public school systems - 1 views

  •
Many schools have clubs that include many types of students that help them get involved and in a community. These clubs are sometimes led by teachers, fellow students, or parents. Examples of such organizations are FCA, bible study, and so on that are incorporating religion into school. Some say this is against the law, while others say they are merely meeting in the school and not teaching it with the curriculum. Reread old files and cases to determine for yourself where you stand on this popular topic.
  •
I looked at a similar article when choosing my articles. It is interesting that so many of think prayer is not allowed in schools. So often the media sensationalizes these matters, and we as citizens do not do our due diligence in double checking the facts.

Teenagers, social media, and terrorism: a threat level hard to assess - 0 views

  •
This article discusses the controversy between freedom of speech and preventing terrorism. A high school students Facebook comments put him in court.
  •
It's nice to see how serious our law enforcement agencies are taking this. I'm all for making an example out of this kid. However, I'm not sure if 20 years is the answer either. If anything the kid needs some help, not a third of his life behind bars. Of course I can't share a definite observation, and opinion on the matter because I haven't listen to the video. Again, either way the security of our nation and its people is and should be highest priority.

The Danger of Censoring Our History - 1 views

  •
This website talks about how censoring our history will give students a false sense of history. It says we won't learn from history if we don't know the accurate version. It also gives examples of teachers going on strike because of this.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
Good read. You definitely cannot censored history, it is something that has to be told in entirety even if it is good, bad, ugly or indifferent. The truth cannot be censored.
  •
I like this article you chose. No one should have to limit their knowledge to false information. we should be told the truth and we deserve it. it is our history!
  •
If we do not have a comprehensible history, our future will be uncertain. Truth is everything and without it, we are living in a false representation of understanding. It is definitely something worth fighting for.

Accommodations for Students with Special Needs - 0 views

  •
special education rarely sets up special lesson plans for the students thinking they can learn anyways.Teachers then have to take the time to go through and make those accommodations. This seemingly little accommodations can take a lot of effort but they allow students to have higher success rates. The rest of the article shows examples of accommodations that can be made for special needs students.
  •
Lesson plans that are put into place for a student with special needs is followed to the goals that are put into place during a placement meeting or IEP(Individualized Education Plan). This allows for the student to reach the goals that are put into place and if they're not being met then another meeting is scheduled to find a solution or different goals.

We need an education system that excites children - 1 views

  •
The article talks about how the educational system need to be more then just math, english, and science but also teach children active life skills and young adults life skills for the future career they may want in the future, teaching that the SAT's isn't the best approach for testing, very well written article that I enjoyed reading.
  •
On this topic, so many things to say. I have to admit here the educational system is very different than other countries. What really surprised me, was that the classes like history, biology, chemistry, geography..are optional. I really don't understand how you expect a child to learn and get some general knowledge, if these classes are optional. It is most likely that the child would chose none or one maybe, and then we think oh, the child can learn from internet or TV. But, the child would rather play a game online or watch a movie. The educational system needs readjustment and the curriculum changed in some classes where you have only dry material to study. We live in a society where technology is everywhere in all forms, we should take advantage of that, and create something more attractive to kids with the purpose of learning, almost like a game. I am sure that will attract children, and it will even encourage competition among them. For example, some of the educational apps, we see on all devices.

Betsy DeVos, a Friend of LGBT Rights? - 1 views

  •
In interviews with past colleagues, Betsy DeVos is shown in private to be a friend of the LGBT community, a stark contrast to her current public image. Will the real Secretary of Education please stand up?
  •
I believe that Gay rights, even though it has been passed through the supreme court, is something that society is still struggling to accept. LGBT couple should be given the same opportunities as those who are not LGBT. For example, the ability to have or adopt children. It's a shame that some families are still denied that right. Very interesting article.

Arizona | Death Penalty - 1 views

  •
This article is very informational on the death penalty in Arizona. It shows a timeline on how the process started back in 1965, until current times. It ranges from hangings, to gas chambers, and now the lethal injections. There are examples provided as well on the different inmate cases that were sentenced the death penalty. It is more informational rather than argumentative on death penalties.

Really interesting article. I had no idea all of the problems Arizona has had and the controversies involved. The timeline helped paint the picture of the major events, all which were new to me.
  •
In my opinion I'm not agree with death penalty for criminals. I know that some of them deserve death or more but I think we don't have the right to take lives away.
  •
I agree with you 100%. I liked this article because it stated facts on the death penalty in Arizona(informational), but it was not argumentative. It allowed me to become more educated on the topic.

Equal Pay - 5 views

  •
Women deserve equal pay. On average, they are paid less than their male counterparts. It effects their spending power and what women receive in their social security.
  • ...3 more comments...
  •
This is a really good article because it also talks about how race affects the pay gap. Most articles I find on the topic ignore how non-white women are paid less than white women. The struggle for mothers attempting to reenter the workplace is horrible.
  •
A reality unfortunately, in our society. It is almost hilarious how you read on all papers when you are hired :"we are an equal opportunity employer, no discrimination of any kind..." and yet the first thing you notice is the pay you get in comparison with a man who is less qualified than you but...he is a man. And, as kat2222004 pointed, very hard for mothers to reenter the work field, the mother is not trusted anymore to be a reliable employee.
  •
Really good article. I saw this as I was choosing a topic to discuss in our discussion last week. I 100% agree that women should receive the same pay as men. Women are such hard workers whether it is in the work force, or for those who have to maintain a family as well.
  •
The 77 cent claim has been repeatedly refuted because it does not accommodate for the fact that women are more likely to choose lower paying jobs or jobs with benefits. Men on average work longer hours. Single, childless women in major cities earn more than men. Women obtain 58% of college degrees. Women are less likely to go into STEM jobs. Also statistics are easily manipulated. Watch TJ explain the wage gap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWAlg48fNwE
  •
I definitely agree with this article. Even if some people like to think this isn't a problem it definitely is. For men and women in the same field regardless of what that field is men often get the higher income than women do. My mother is a major example of this and often talks about how the men in the same department as her make more money even when they produce less work that generally isn't that good. On top of that my mother works the same amount of hours and even more than average in a given week yet still doesn't come close to the pay gap. Of course, there may be inconsistency in statistics but it is definitely still an issue to be aware of because it still exists.

Domestic Violence - 2 views

  •
This article states generic information on the different types of abuse then leads into specifics. It displays facts, warnings, and signs of a domestic violence in relations. Becoming to controlling, demanding, and jealous are a few examples they specify. Any type of abuse may not show early on, but become more clear as the relationship progresses.

  •
I have witnessed domestic violence first hand and the devastation it causes. It isn't always physical abuse either. A lot of times it is verbal and manipulative. It is very sad that insecurities and mental issues have such a devastating effect.
  •
Domestic violence can be physically, sexually and mentally. Many people now days want to have control of the relationship. When a person is starting to be possessive and controlling is a sign that you are going to be miserable with that person. People are free to do whatever they want to do, think how they want to think. we have to take action. No more domestic violence.
  •
I would like to see more of a punishment for cases involving abuse. So many cases slip through, or are not made a priority due to it being such a common issue. It is tragic to think someone can get away with victimizing family members, partners, or even strangers. I also believe substance abuse plays a huge role in why people want to have the upper-hand on others.
  •
This is an issue that should not be happening in the world today. It is important that we focus on controlling situations such as this so they stop being so common.
  •
People need to be more aware of signs that could possibly be domestic violence. I also think that we should learn more about it as children in school, and even offer ways for young ones to seek help if they're afraid.

racial discrimination comes in many form - 0 views

  •
This article gives us a clear and brief definition of racial discrimination found in daily treatment towards each other. Stereotyping, racial profiling, prejudice and overt bias and some other subtle forms of racial inequality are often considered as racially distinguishing. From a small comment such as " it is because they are from.." to isolating a non-American person can have a big impact on that person's life.

This article gives many reasons why Planned Parenthood should be funded. It provides statistics and what they do for millions of women. It also gives an real example of what happens when the funding is cut and the repercussions.

I believe that planned parenthood should be funded. It would reduce the amount of self-done abortions. It would also provide healthcare to mothers who can't afford it.
