CPS Failed - 3 views

  •
This article is just upsetting. CPS failed to remove 3 children from their caregivers home after an officer reported concern, several other reports, and signs of neglect. Unfortunately, today only one of the three siblings are alive. CPS should be accountable.

CPS should be accountable absolutely! In my opinion CPS pursues may cases that are unjustified and neglect the more serious cases that may take a bit more work. It is appalling.
  •
This story is upsetting. Within the first visit from a social worker there were countless red flags indicating the house is unsafe. The children probably feared of what the guardian would do if they spoke up. I feel all three of the children were too young and traumatized to even know what was going on. CPS should have taken these children into custody immediately, two lives could have been saved. Or at least do a random check up frequently to get a better outlook on the situation.
  •
This article is so heartbreaking. CPS should have done something from the beginning when they first started noticing abuse. I have experience with a bad social worker before when I was fostering a child. She was suppose to come every month to check on him but wouldn't show up for months. CPS needs to find a solution to get these social workers to do there jobs to protect these children.
  •
is heartbreaking how a little mistake can change a lot of people's life. In this case 2 children are death. CPS need to have professional workers that know how to identify the emotions of the kids. This case show us how life is unfair with some people and how sad it can be when some people don't do their job right.

Surviving Kidnapping - 3 views

15 true stories of the torment kids went through while they were kidnapped. These are children that were taken and lived to tell the story.

It is heartbreaking when you know how kids can suffer. According to some investigations the majority of kids that are kidnap get kidnap by someone they know. These are only 15 stories of kids that were kidnap and is sad because there are thousands of kids that are killed after they being kidnap.
  •
This article is incredible and devastating at the same time. It's heartbreaking that these people had to go through what they did, but it's so amazing to see how their instincts and the help of others were able to get them out of such horrifying situations.
  •
The stories of the children being kidnapped were shocking. Just to think that many of those kids that are abducted are usually taken by people they know. It was good to read on some stories where kids could still get through what they went through and marry and have children of their own.
  •
Wow, these stories are so sad. I can not even begin to imagine what it must have been like. It makes me happy that these 15 kids made it through those horrible situations and are able to talk about it today. Although those tough situations make you a stronger person, these kids were able to have families of their own and that is a good thing. It is even more sad to know that there are thousands of other kids out there going through the same thing if not worse at this very instant.
  •
Reading stories like this just make you cringe. It's crazy to think that this is a major issue in our day. It's good to read and see how they live after they go through this traumatic experience.

Should men get paternity leave from work? - 2 views

  •
Do you believe men should get paternity leave from work? This site provides both sides to whether fathers should get time off of work to help raise and care for their children or not. Comment below your thoughts!

I noticed that some of the arguments against men getting paternity leave are that the women do all of the work, so the men do not deserve it. I think this is a foolish argument because it is contradicting. If the mom does all of the hard work, why not give the father paternity leave in order to help her with the baby? The father cannot do anything about the growing baby in her stomach and all of the side effects that come with it, however, he can help feed the baby, change the baby, and put the child to sleep. It is not a vacation, it is time given to spend with their newborn child and assist in one of the most difficult phases of being a parent.
  •
I fully support this debate. Men should be afforded the right to be a parent just as much as a mother is.
  •
I agree, men should be able to get time off from work so they can also spend time with their new baby!
  •
I had a conversation with a coworker recently. We didn't understand why men are not offered Paternity leave at several companies including the one I work for. I believe that men need the time to bond with their children just as much as the mother does.
  •
I would have loved it if my husband could have taken time off from work when my children were born. Things aren't as clearly defined as they used to be. There aren't mens jobs and womens jobs. My husband helped me with all of my children, as well as working a full time job. It's up to each family to decide what works for them. We have stay at home dads now and moms who work and everything in between.
  •
This is an interesting topic, that I haven't herd before. It should be up to the man. although the women are the ones who are actually pregnant...
  •
I would have loved if my husband could have had paternity leave from work when I had my children. It also depends on the circumstances in the family household. Can they afford for both to be on leave?
  •
This website is a debating website that states a question and shows you people's responses from both sides (yes or no.) It doesn't necessarily hold factual information from one person, but can give insightful opinions or facts from a lot of people to help build your own argument.

Many social media users experience cyber-bullying. It's sad to say that it's a common and fairly easy thing to do and there should be more movements to stop it, but when there's people like celebrities doing it, who have millions of followers, there isn't an initiative or example to follow that promotes the cessation of cyber-bullying.
  •
Cyber-bullying is definitely an issue that needs to be discussed. Many online platforms don't adequately deal with bullying. Bullying can also lead to suicide. An example of this I believe is the suicide trend seen on some social media sites where teenagers primarily spend their time on such as Tumblr.
  •
I was glad to see a topic on cyber bulling it is a huge issue due to the fact that we are always on electronic divides. I recently just watched a movie on the subject the other night on Netflix. In the movie the young girl told both her parents and the school that she was being harassed and the school did nothing to help. The young girl ended up committing suicide.
  •
I think that cyber bullying is certainly a big issue. A lot of people may not even know that they are cyber bullying. You can see all over the internet people making fun of other people, even if it seems harmless. Some people don't realize that this can affect someone tremendously. They don't think about what they are putting online before they post it.
  •
People are too afraid too confront others, so they go online and make fun of them instead. When we are behind our phones or computers we feel a lot more comfortable and don't think much about it. Cyber bullying is wrong and hurts others emotionally.
  •
I am also glad that this was an article posted. This is such a growing issue, and has been for sometime. It's extremely unfortunate that school are part of this, and when these children go home they can't find solace because of the internet and all the social apps created.

Child Sex Trafficking - 2 views

  •
This article is about how prevelant child sex trafficking is in the US. 100,000 a year to be exact. It is a 9.8 billion dollar industry
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
The market for sex trafficking is in the billions yet, I cannot recall any coverage on the capture and arrest of a sex trafficking ring. It would be helpful to know what progress has been made in curtailing the practice of selling children for sex. I can think of several arrests in the news for smuggling and selling drugs. It bothers me that something this impactful to innocent lives and so detrimental to society does not appear to have any signs of slowing down.
  •
Nearly half of the people captured for human trafficking are children. If children ever make it out of human trafficking, they have severe physical and mental health issues.
  •
Sex trafficking has been such a devastating thing that has yet to decline over the years. It seems as if the more time goes on, the numbers increase and not the other way around. 100,000 lives to be taken a year is so saddening. It is such a shame that there is no way even with technology today to decrease these numbers.

Children's Rights - 1 views

  •
Even though child labor laws were passed decades ago prohibiting employment of underage youngsters, pockets of oppressive child labor exist, literally, on American soil; child farm laborers work long hours in squalid conditions and often receive half the standard minimum wage.
  •
This is a very strong topic. Mostly because children can't really speak up, and we are the ones that need to do it for them. You're childhood should be something you enjoy and not have to struggle through. And the fact that they are always taken advantage of, with low wages and horrible working conditions, makes it an extreme priority in social justice issues.

Although I don't think it will be me who takes this subject on as my research project, I hope someone else does. I don't remember anyone bringing this topic up in our first discussion. This kind of stuff really bothers me while watching it in a movie or reading about it in a book. I don't have the stomach for it.
  •
Many people over look this topic. It is important to watch out for children and recognize child abuse.
  •
This is a major issue and would be a great subject for a research project. Our children are our future and need to be taken care of.

Child Labor in China - 1 views

  •
This article discusses the issue of child labor in China. Clearly, there are many reasons for the seeming necessity of child labor such as poverty, or lack of resources, but it is still remains a problem that has yet to be entirely resolved.
  •
This is such a sad topic to talk about but needed to be done. Those kids are taken advantage of to the max.
  •
I am glad you decided to share this issue regarding child labor. I noticed this article was posted 3 years ago, I wonder how much that number (11 million) has gone up since then. I like how this person provided us insight into how exactly child labor exists. This is definitely an issue that needs to be stopped.

Human trafficking articles and sites are never easy to read. This one had some good information especially on how they try to lure the victims.
  •
This article has some good insight on what to look for. It also explains why a lot of victims do not come forward which is especially sad. If more people knew what to look for I think that it would definitely help these victims.
  •
this article discusses what human trafficing is. It also goes on to talk about ways trafficers lure victims. Things like fraud can be used for victims to avoid contacting police.

The Ethics (or not) of Massive Government Surveillance - 0 views

  • Prominent examples of surveillance include surveillance cameras, wiretaps, GPS tracking, and internet surveillance.
  • expression of control
  • profound impact with regards to the ethics of placing individual under surveillance
  • ...20 more annotations...
  • close surveillance is much more intrusive than it has been in the past.
  • Constitution protects American citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures
  • citizens have not been given the same protection with regards to electronic surveillance
  • "If you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear."
    • smurphy6600

This statement has an Orwellian tone to it to indicate the tone of the article to the reader as cautious, paranoid even, and fearful
  • as most people are law-abiding citizens, most ostensibly will not be targeted for surveillance and it will not impact their lives,
  • safer through the elimination of criminals.
  • the government already has the ability to track a known target's movements to a reasonable degree, and has easy access to information such as one's purchasing habits, online activities, phone conversations, and mail.
  • if the individual has been treated unfairly and procedures violated, are there appropriate means of redress? Are there means for discovering violations and penalties to encourage responsible surveillant behavior
  • allowing surreptitious surveillance of one form, even limited in scope and for a particular contingency, encourages government to expand such surveillance programs in the future
  • the danger of a "slippery slope" scenario cannot be dismissed as paranoia
  • British police are now pushing for the DNA collection of children who "exhibit behavior indicating they may become criminals in later life"
    • smurphy6600

This opens a door for discriminatory profiling from government agencies and educators who report the behavior
  • M.I.T. professor Gary Marx, who argued that before implementing surveillance we should evaluate the proposed methods by asking a number of questions, which we enumerate below:
  • does the technique cross a personal boundary without permission (
  • are individuals aware that personal information is being collected, who seeks it and why?
  • consent
    • smurphy6600

The issue seems to be that consumers using the technology our government tracks aren't aware of what they are consenting to due to the long and overly-articulated terms and conditions presented to them in a purposefully confusing manner in order to gain access to their data
  • human review of machine generated results
  • With the expansion of surveillance, such abuses could become more numerous and more egregious as the amount of personal data collected increases.
  • security of the data be adequately protected?
  • are the goals of the data collection legitimate?
  • In general, we feel that surveillance can be ethical, but that there have to exist reasonable, publicly accessible records and accountability for those approving and performing the surveillance in question.
  •
The website offers links to various sources of information on the collection and distribution of surveilled data from government agencies in an attempt to inform its readers and covers the paranoia tinted tone of those who find government surveillance in todays society to be too close to "Big Brother" methods and presents an argument for their point of view through the methods of MIT professor Gary Marx. The argument is presented in a series of questions on the ethical stance of what the government surveils, what the surveillance consists of as well as the consequences of any action taken as a result of surveillance and the reality that American citizens never consented to the constant surveillance of their personal lives. The position of inclination towards complacency is concisely summed with a strong amount of surveillance being presented by the double edged statement of "If you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear.".
