Ruthless pragmatism has triumphed over the people's revolutions - 1 views

  •
Democracy was the key word during the Arab Spring demonstrations of 2011. Rather than violent uprisings, they were protests calling for free elections, parliaments and, more generally, a stake in society for millions kept alienated and impoverished.

Rick Santorum shows need for moral society so democracy thrives | Liberty University - 0 views

  •
November 10, 2014 : By Drew Menard/Liberty University News Service Rick Santorum, the one-time presidential candidate, took the stage at Liberty University's Convocation on Monday to emphasize the important role that America plays in shaping the world. In order for this influence to continue, he added, it is imperative that Americans remain grounded in morality. How weird is that?? ^^^ So I was going to post the article that criticizes how Rick Santorum blatantly links Islam straight to violence and talks about how different they are from Christians, but its interesting to see how reframing happens in media so shamelessly. The above description is about how Santorum's speech (which took place at a conservative college) was so enlightening... even though it was totally just a political stunt because he's running for Prez in 2016 (lol other article: http://thinkprogress.org/world/2014/09/29/3573218/rick-santorum-baptist-ministers-jihad/)

Reza Aslan Slams Bill Maher For Islam Comments - 0 views

  •
This Iranian-American writer and scholar, Reza Aslan, points out how dumb the media has been covering stories about Islam, and how they are using bigotry to sum up all Muslim countries together.
  •
Did you see the follow up on CNN? The anchor (I guess that's what you'd call him) said that Aslan's *tone* reinforced the idea that Muslims are hostile people. I also recommend watching Ben Affleck's visit to Maher's show if you haven't seen that too. Coincidentally, a Palestinian-American scholar lost his tenured job at University of Illinois again for the "uncivil tone" of his Twitter account.
  •
Wow that's truly awful that'd they'd follow up like that but it's not surprising coming from a fear-mongering giant like CNN lol. It's sad that that's the only way they could wrap out how he basically schooled them in their knowledge of violence worldwide. And yes i've seen that interview too

Move to UAE has increased knowledge of Islam, say expats | The National - 0 views

  •
ABU DHABI // Expatriates have embraced the UAE's culture and traditions, and increased their understanding of Islam since they moved here. Most western expatriates (94 per cent) say they have embraced the culture, followed by Arab expatriates (93 per cent) and Asian expatriates (89 per cent). Wow, so according to this source people moving into the UAE from Western culture have apparently started embracing that culture. This article sounds really good on the surface, but recalling that UAE is like one of the countries that actually still enforces possibility of death penalty for homosexual activity and prison sentences or beatings for adultery...

Why I don't believe people who say they loathe Islam but not Muslims | Andrew Brown - 0 views

  •
It is a trope among people who loathe and fear Islam that their fear and loathing has nothing in common with racism because Islam is not a race, the implication being that hating Muslims is rational and wise whereas hating black people is deeply irrational and stupid. Very relevant topic to my Research project, really brings home why people who have a prejudice towards Islam make tolerant people uncomfortable. Hopefully this article can influence others who feel the need to express their hatred for a religion they don't know much about.

Is Egypt Moving Toward Secularism? - 0 views

  •
This article provides an analysis of the role in religion moving forward from the revolution. While some groups promote a totally secular state, others are encouraging a system of government that is dictated by Sharia law. Some articles have been passed in the new constitutional referendum that are very controversial. The articles (2, 54, and 219) were an attempt to establish Islamic authority in rule, as well as the authority of other groups like Coptic Christians and Jews. In short, the identity of the Egyptian state is being defined by these political moves. Although different Islamic groups try to distinguish themselves politically, other leaders have tried to present the issue as a dichotomy between and Islamic state and a secular state. In reality, the political diversity is better represented by a spectrum. However, these groups must find enough popular and physical support to enact policies. Any policies enacted will be too much for one group, and not enough imposition for another.

By Lee Ferran and Rym Momtaz Born from an especially brutal al Qaeda faction, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has grown from relative obscurity in recent years to overshadow its extremist patrons. It now terrorizes large swaths of Syria and Iraq, has become the target of the largest U.S.
