Why I don't believe people who say they loathe Islam but not Muslims | Andrew Brown - 0 views

  •
It is a trope among people who loathe and fear Islam that their fear and loathing has nothing in common with racism because Islam is not a race, the implication being that hating Muslims is rational and wise whereas hating black people is deeply irrational and stupid. Very relevant topic to my Research project, really brings home why people who have a prejudice towards Islam make tolerant people uncomfortable. Hopefully this article can influence others who feel the need to express their hatred for a religion they don't know much about.

How Jordan uses Islam against the Islamic State - 0 views

  •
Many people in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan fear the ideological appeal of the Islamic State could create a homegrown threat from the militant group. To counter this potential threat, Jordan has imposed new rules on its Muslim clerics. Such an interesting tactic, but also very important. These effort should be completely supported to both distance the link between Islam and the foolishness/heresy/violence of the Islamic State, but also illegitimatize ISIS' influence on Middle East persons.

Move to UAE has increased knowledge of Islam, say expats | The National - 0 views

  •
ABU DHABI // Expatriates have embraced the UAE's culture and traditions, and increased their understanding of Islam since they moved here. Most western expatriates (94 per cent) say they have embraced the culture, followed by Arab expatriates (93 per cent) and Asian expatriates (89 per cent). Wow, so according to this source people moving into the UAE from Western culture have apparently started embracing that culture. This article sounds really good on the surface, but recalling that UAE is like one of the countries that actually still enforces possibility of death penalty for homosexual activity and prison sentences or beatings for adultery...

Rick Santorum shows need for moral society so democracy thrives | Liberty University - 0 views

  •
November 10, 2014 : By Drew Menard/Liberty University News Service Rick Santorum, the one-time presidential candidate, took the stage at Liberty University's Convocation on Monday to emphasize the important role that America plays in shaping the world. In order for this influence to continue, he added, it is imperative that Americans remain grounded in morality. How weird is that?? ^^^ So I was going to post the article that criticizes how Rick Santorum blatantly links Islam straight to violence and talks about how different they are from Christians, but its interesting to see how reframing happens in media so shamelessly. The above description is about how Santorum's speech (which took place at a conservative college) was so enlightening... even though it was totally just a political stunt because he's running for Prez in 2016 (lol other article: http://thinkprogress.org/world/2014/09/29/3573218/rick-santorum-baptist-ministers-jihad/)

Ben Affleck's Attack on 'Islamophobia' Inspires One Muslim Woman To Write An Open Lette... - 0 views

  •
After the heated argument Ben Affleck had with Real Time host Bill Maher, people are still debating the topic of Islam in the world. A Muslim woman named Eiynah has entered the discussion, and directed her opinion of the often archaic nature of Islam in an open letter to Affleck, which was posted on Pakistan Today : Dear Ben, I am writing to you today as a woman who was born and raised in Islam. This topic is interesting because liberals in the West are so annoyed by the rhetoric that comes from bigoted sources; while Affleck was standing up for what he believes in, the writer suggests he should have gone about it in a different way. It's just also unfortunate that many are quick to judge and condemn a faith even though other faiths have had just as many problems (and have supported immoral practices) throughout history. However its still important to bring up and try to make solutions for human rights crisis that take place based on Sharia law.

This topic was interesting because liberals in America have to deal with bigoted rhetoric all the time and its frustrating. While the author of the letter was proud of Affleck for standing up for Islamic people and what he believes is right, she suggests he just go about it in a different way because discussions of human right violations in the Middle East should still be called out.

British Muslims face worst job discrimination of any minority group, according to research - 0 views

  •
Muslim men were up to 76 per cent less likely to have a job of any kind compared to white, male British Christians of the same age and with the same qualifications. And Muslim women were up to 65 per cent less likely to be employed than white Christian counterparts. These statistics are alarming and very high when it comes to being a Muslim citizen in Great Britain. However these ideas are understandable (or at least not unsuspected) when it comes to the relationships people in Europe vs. Muslims have.

Sabrina Jalees' dad made huge sacrifice when she came out to him - 0 views

  •
A Muslim father has supported his gay daughter in a way that she never thought he would, turning his back on his entire family who refuse to accept her. Sabrina Jalees had been reluctant to come out to her Pakistani dad, Sayed, unsure of how he would react. This is a really interesting topi considering just how harsh Muslim teachings have been in the past when it came to handling homosexuality or any for of "immodesty." Also highlights the fact that Muslims are totally capable of choosing family over religion regardless of the stereotypes.

Reza Aslan Slams Bill Maher For Islam Comments - 0 views

  •
This Iranian-American writer and scholar, Reza Aslan, points out how dumb the media has been covering stories about Islam, and how they are using bigotry to sum up all Muslim countries together.
  •
Wow that's truly awful that'd they'd follow up like that but it's not surprising coming from a fear-mongering giant like CNN lol. It's sad that that's the only way they could wrap out how he basically schooled them in their knowledge of violence worldwide. And yes i've seen that interview too

To Stop ISIS in Syria, Support Aleppo - 0 views

  •
President Obama's speech last week signaled a likely expansion into Syria of American airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, yet offered little indication of an immediate strategy to halt ISIS' gains there. Aleppo is the largest city in Syria and considered to be in the most strategic position. Syria apparently has been dealing with ISIS much more severely than Iraq.
