CTLT and Friends

Written with an eye to advising a bright student who is home schooled, but also to capture my advice and strategy for Palouse Prairie. \n\nSince i see we are starting to develop a 'blogging' thread in this Diigo group, and such a tool could be part of strategy for what to tell faculty, I decided to bookmark this into that stream.

Prof. Stanley Fish ponders the book " "The Last Professors: The Corporate University and the Fate of the Humanities," by Frank Donoghue. Donoghue argues that utilitarianism is all but triumphant in the American university, and that the non-instrumental studies like the Humanities are doomed.

"The University Iuav of Venice is a small university with 3 faculties, 14 undergraduate and graduate degree programmes, 15 master degree programmes, 7 PhD programmes and a limited number of students. Although small in size, the Iuav's specificity, that of being a theme-based university, makes it unique among other Italian universities. intersting idea to collect and vote on a series of items. the example i looked at was questions for obama, which requires some heavy moderation, but on a less charged front (or with limited access to add stuff) the tool could have some real power.

tools for web 2.0 marketing. while he's focused on business, it seems that it would apply to any organization building brand. take a look at Obama Everywhere on /www.barackobama.com the campaign site.

It's way too easy to go global now, whether with your feelings, your money or your nightmares. The road to hell is paved with immediacy:

Freedom of speech and the right to assemble are limited in Egypt, which since 1981 has been ruled by Mubarak's National Democratic Party under a permanent state-of-emergency law. An estimated 18,000 Egyptians are imprisoned under the law, which allows the police to arrest people without charges, allows the government to ban political organizations and makes it illegal for more than five people to gather without a license from the government. Newspapers are monitored by the Ministry of Information and generally refrain from directly criticizing Mubarak. And so for young people in Egypt, Facebook, which allows users to speak freely to one another and encourages them to form groups, is irresistible as a platform not only for social interaction but also for dissent.

This demo -- from Pattie Maes' lab at MIT, spearheaded by Pranav Mistry -- was the buzz of TED. It's a wearable device with a projector that paves the way for profound interaction with our environment. Imagine "Minority Report" and then some.

ummary: Community features are spreading from "Web 2.0" to "Enterprise 2.0." Research across 14 companies found that many are making productive use of social intranet features. Includes guidelines for implementation of "Enterprise 2.0" based on the experience of surveyed companies.

One of the biggest challenges for a document management system built on SharePoint is scaling lists.  There is actually quite a bit of knowledge spread across the help files, technet documentation, in whitepapers and on blogs… but it's still quite difficult to navigate this challenge.

There are some work arounds cited in the bug tracker referenced but they include shutting off critically useful parts of Firebug. This is only an issue for people using recent Firefox and Firebug versions. I'm keeping a close eye on this one and will keep you all updated.

A bad bug I've run into and am tracking. Basically if you combine the latest Firefox with recent Firebug you can get some rather nasty looking errors.
