This website was originally created as a resource of 5,000 images concerning the American Civil War, but has since grown to include many more subject areas concerning U.S. History. The site is very easy to navigate and provides teachers and students with clear headings to find pictures from whatever specific area of U.S. History they are looking for. Here are just a few of the main headings used for categorizing the photos: Native Americans, Native American Culture, The Age of Exploration, Settlements and Colonies, Slavery in America, etc. I could easily see this resource being used by a high school U.S. History teacher, as well as by their students. A teacher could use this resource to add more visual meaning and interest to their own presentations or guided notes. Students, like-wise, could easily add relevant photos to their reports, presentations, or research projects. Students may require help with downloading the photos and embedding into their presentations, but this could be corrected with a simple modeling exercise where the teacher demonstrates how to navigate the site and download any desired photos. I really liked this site and have never seen it before. I plan on taking advantage of this year as I plan to create some new U.S. History assignments for my students.

Soundbible.com is an audio source that provides copyright free sound effects and clips. It also provides royalty free sounds at only .10 per sound. This site would be great to explore if teaching a 10th grade world history or 11th grade U.S. history class. (It has sounds from specific war weapons/planes, etc.) However, it can be used with many other grades and students of varying abilities. It offers nature sounds, animal sounds, etc. These sounds can be used in a PowerPoint or other presentation and the sounds offered are great quality. EduPic Graphical Resource was created by a teacher and is a free image resource for educators and their students. There are over 6,000 different photos and illustrations to pick from. Most of the images seem to be geared toward middle and high school science and history classes; however, there are a few images for other subjects. A few examples of how I can see this resource being used would include a high school US History class studying Abraham Lincoln or washington monuments or a 7th grade Life Science class learning about biomes. The only downside I can see to this resource is that the main focus is on science and history so it would be limiting for certain subjects or grade levels.

Ookaboo provides almost one million images that are searchable by concepts. The pictures are licensed under various Creative Commons licenses or are public domain, and are free to use for educational and other non-commercial use. You can find more information about using the photos at http://about.ookaboo.com/a/. This site would be great to use for high school students in a variety of subjects: world history, U.S. history, biology and environmental science. It could also be used for middle school geography classes. The photos appear to be of very good quality, and the website is easy to use.

Discover Yale Digital Content's site contains images from Yale's museum collections. The site describes itself as "a way to search across Yale's collections of art, natural history, books, and maps, as well as photos, audio, and video documenting people, places, and events that form part of Yale's institutional identity and contribution to scholarship." Often literature is intimately connected to history and historical events, art work, geography, etc. Using these images can help students form connections with the time in which a particular work of literature was written, helping to deepen their knowledge.  Discover Yale's copyright policy: "The mission of Yale University is to create, disseminate, and preserve knowledge. Here we feature the best movies of the United States Government, from training films to history, from our national parks to the U.S. Fire Academy and the Postal Inspectors, all of these fine flix are available for reuse without any restrictions whatsoever. There are many different topics that would be so helpful for teachers. There is a lot of history available. Showing these to 5th graders would be very interesting for them to see actual footage of specific topics in our curriculum. Specific items would be World War II film. That is covered in 5th grade curriculum. Difficulties with using this sight is that children should not be using them without a teacher previewing the info first. Some of the things may be too graphic.

LIFE Magazine Photo Archives is a very exciting image repository with tens of thousands of free images. These images can be used in many different content areas. The images available on this site are free and high quality

LIFE Magazine Photo Archives is a very exciting image repository with tens of thousands of free images. Images come stocked from thousands of picture token over the years by Life Magazine photographers. This site is very user friendly and has resources available for all ages. The best group of students to use this resource with is students 9-12. They would benefit from these resources because it offers such a large volume of images. This would be very valuable for this group of students to research images for History. Because Life Magazine is so famous for capturing and writing about some of the world greatest moment, accomplishment, and conflicts student could use the images to create a time line. Each images could be used to represent a significant event during certain time period in history.

The Library of Congress: American Memory is an excellent source for a variety of resources, including images, video, and audio recordings. The resources are free, but be sure to check out its copyright notice at http://www.loc.gov/homepage/legal.html. This website would be useful in an 11th grade U.S. History class. While the site is a little hard to navigate at first because of the many resources available, it is an excellent way to incorporate Common Core standards with the many high quality primary resources.

Olga's Gallery is a site created "as a project to help children learn the history of painting, religion, and literature" by Olga and Helen Mataev. It has over 10,000 images of historic works of art that literature teachers would find immensely helpful. For instance, if you're teaching W. H. Auden's "Musee des Beaux Arts," having access to Pieter Breugel's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus is vital to understanding the message Auden's trying to send.  Olga's Gallery Copyright Policy: Use of all artwork on the website is governed by the terms of the Fair Use doctrine of United States copyright law as being non-profit and educational in nature. World images has recently added over 3000 images in a variety of areas including art and architecture, politics, exploration, and technology. This site would be an awesome site for history. There are cities from which to choose, art techniques, connecting art and science, and cultures.

The Library of Congress contains a host of collections that can be explored. One Diigo posting referenced the American Memory collection, there are quite a few more. Just a small sample of the prints and photograph collection include Architecture, Design & Engineering Drawings, Ansel Adams Photographs of Japanese-American Interment in Manzanar, and Civil War Glass Negatives. The site is a bit overwhelming and teachers may need to narrow the focus for the students. An elementary and some middle school students would require specific collections presented to them if they were found useful for these age brackets. For instance, a search for trains pulls up information on how the screwdriver was used to make small toy trains. It would require the younger student to know how to narrow the search of the 4000+ pages on trains. This website would be a best fit for history. There are uses for language arts teachers from a historical perspective as well such as propaganda

Find historical maps, geographical maps, cartographic maps, maps of battles, cities, town... This is a very good resource for a social studies teacher. It contains over 4.5 million items. This website may also be good for science teachers who are studying conservation or the travels of an explorer like Darwin. History teachers who study battles during war can find American Revolution, Civil War, WWII battle and campaign maps. Any lesson that requires a map, this is the place to go to first.

This resource specializes in stock footage from around the world. All of the video clips are free to download and to use. There is no subscription or user login required in order to use the footage. This feature makes it ideal to use for educators looking to provide their students with a ready source of footage that they can use for their multimedia presentations. Students interested in media production and editing could create some fantastic presentations, especially if they have access to editing software and a green screen. The more advanced applications of the video clips could be used by high school students, but I could also see middle school aged students utilizing various clips to help with creating presentations for World History or Biology classes. For example, in my 7th grade Life Science class we do a project on the biomes of the world. Students could use the video files from the "Animal Footage" section to incorporate dynamic visuals into their reports. Students could also use footage from different continents to visually identify the various biomes for the class. Modeling of how to download, edit and embed the videos would be necessary to ensure that the students experience success with this resource, but that is just a matter of scheduling instruction time prior to the final projects being completed. The website is very easy to navigate and all clips are easily imported into any editing platforms. This feature makes it easy to use for educators who may have a variety of software on their school computers, depending on which school system they work in.

This website offers a collection of out of copyright recordings, which would greatly serve to enhance a podcast. The site is easy to navigate and allows the user to download the audio file (MP3) to his/her desired location. After this file has been downloaded to the computer, students could then import the file into Audacity in order to edit the audio file to better fit their podcast. Student created podcasts would be a great way for middle school and high school students to convey their ideas or topics to a class. These can be done as individual or group projects. I especially see this type of activity being well suited for a Social Studies context, especially as a way to present research information. The correct application of music, to serve as an intro in a podcast, could greatly assist in the development of a polished final product. However, I would recommend sticking with the instrumental music for most uses within the educational context. But, the creation of a podcast within a history course could be enhanced with the accurate incorporation of time appropriate music. I believe for these music files to be incorporated into a podcast, to benefit the listener, the creator must have a working knowledge of Audacity. However, with the ability to pair Open Music Archive with Audacity can give the individual the tools necessary to create a product that would benefit learners through the multimedia platform.

This is one of the best as a "copyright free" site for image files I found. The only restriction is that these items can not be contributed to other photo libraries (online or off line). The site is originally from England. There are several topics: animals, buildings, nature, places, technology, etc. All items are clear and appealing. (EX. Nature category has 92 pictures of mountains, rivers, flowers, plants, etc.) The file format is jpg with high resolution. A problem might occur when the image is linked to the URL or embedded because the website owner may delete or change the image at any time without notice. I recommend saving the image before using it. Lesson example: Science for 5th grade: 1. Direction: Examine the photo carefully and state how these stones were formed. What history do you see behind these stones? You need to observe the colors, shapes, and sizes of the stone. A group needs to gather knowledge learned in class and use it as evidence to support a group's decision. Resources are to be cited at the end of your paper. 2. Rubric: Final conclusion (2 points), Explanations and reasons well supporting the conclusion (5 points), Resources (texts or images used as evidence) (3 points) 3. This website has thousands of free images that are able to downloaded for free. Many of the images you will find on this site are high quality and well done. You can find an image for a variety of subjects. This website would be best used by students middle school or high school looking for images for a project or PowerPoint presentation. The difficulties a student might run into is the search engine used for this site. It can be very broad when looking for specific pictures. The best use of this website could be for a history class or science class. For example finding pictures for a WWII project can be done very easy for a student at the secondary level. A student would be able to find maps of where the war took place, famous images from the war, types of weapons used, types of planes, etc.
