Pixolu Finds Images by Similarity - 0 views

  •
Web-based application Pixolu helps you find images by their similarity to each other. Enter a search term and Pixolu searches the image indexes of Google, Yahoo, and Flickr. Once Pixolu returns results, you can further refine them by dragging images to a holding area on the lower right corner of the interface. In my test run, I searched for pumpkins. I specifically wanted pictures of lots of pumpkins gathered together but not pictures of Jack o' Lanterns or pumpkin pie. By dragging and dropping pictures of multiple pumpkins from my initial search into the sidebar and refining the search, Pixolu narrowed down the remaining images into just those of tons of pumpkins clustered together.

Beautiful site and looks like the software is super easy to use to virtually look at anything in space. Big wow factor. Only drawback is that it takes some hefty computing power to run the software. For example, while the minimum RAM is 1 GB, they recommend 2 GB AND while 1 GB minimum hard drive is okay, they suggest 10GB. Now for most people, only the RAM will be the issue. However, it is so cool, I'd love to run out and get a PC with the power to run this application.

If you are looking for a Moodle resource check out my new book!
  •
I think it's unfortunate that you are selling a resource for free/open source educational software. The beauty of Moodle is it's comprehensive online resources in addition to its accesibility for relative novice to advanced users. Making money off The volunteer work of oThers is not ethical and I fear that continued practices will cause such readily available resources to go commercial.
  •
I am not selling the software. I am helping K-12 teachers implement its use in the classroom. If you have done as much professional development as I have with K-12 teachers you will know that the resources available online are not adequate for your average classroom teacher. Believe me, the little bit I may make with my book will not encourage Moodle to be a commercial venture. Believe it or not there are other books written on Moodle. Do a search on Amazon.com and you'll find many more Moodle books.

Social Bookmarking in Education - 15 views

  •
Many educators just use the favorites menu on their computer either at work or home. But what about when we're at home and need to get to a site we saved at school? This is where social bookmarking comes in! Bookmarking favorite links on the internet is something that can make life easier for us as educators - it means that it's easy to find a really neat site later when looking for it. Putting SOCIAL in Bookmarking the social part of social bookmarking works like this: you can share your links that you've saved through a service like Diigo with anyone else who uses Diigo. You can also use Diigo to see the interesting links that your friends and other people bookmark - this can be extremely useful for a team of teachers who like to share teaching resources. You can even search Diigo to find the many bookmarks that others have saved - it helps sort out the good sites, which is hard to do on most search engines. If a lot of other teachers have saved a link, you know it's at least popular. This article also addresses "What is tagging?" and "How do I use tags?"

What makes the Kindle successful is the effortlessness of it. One-click book buying. Forty-five-second book downloading. One-click book reading. Amazon tore down every last barrier, minimizing the number of steps at every turn. the convenience is amazing. So if they're going to bring those e-books to the iPhone, it had better be darned simple. And, sure enough, it is.

The coolest bits of classroom tech I've ever seen | Education IT - 0 views

  •
I met with a representative from Turning Technologies today. While many of you may have had the opportunity to use interactive response systems (so-called "clickers"), we're finally moving into the 21st century; now that we have reasonable computing facilities at all of our schools, our goal is to fully utilize them and add interactivity. Thus, these interactive response systems that allow students to answer questions and take surveys in class with their aggregated responses displayed within a PowerPoint presentation or on a standalone unit. the real beauty of Turning's system is its direct integration with PowerPoint (sorry, no OpenOffice integration, although the software can be superimposed over any Mac or Windows software). It includes a dedicated toolbar and a series of macros for automating the creation of interactive slides.
