Calling all bloggers! - Leadership Day 2010 | Dangerously Irrelevant - 4 views

  • Since the past three have been so successful,* I am putting out a call for people to participate in Leadership Day 2010. As I said three years ago: Many of our school leaders (principals, superintendents, central office administrators) need help when it comes to digital technologies. A lot of help, to be honest. As I’ve noted again and again on this blog, most school administrators don’t know

Make Any Printer AirPrint Compatible - 17 views

  •
AirPrint is definitely one of the more convenient features of iOS 4.2.1 and thanks to a new tool you can turn any printer connected to your Mac or Windows PC into an AirPrint compatible printer. The utility is called AirPrint Hacktivator and it's very easy to use, this is a much simpler method than using the prior hack to manually enable AirPrint in Mac OS X 10.6.5.

2 | When The Internet Is Your Brain: - 8 views

  •
In H+: The Digital Series, a post-apocalyptic techno-thriller that debuts today from producer Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X2, House), a consumer device that allows people to stay connected 24-hours a day directly results in the demise of one-third of the Earth's population. That's a scary vision for any epoch, but perhaps especially one currently salivating at the prospect of new iThings. The culprit in H+, which is shorthand for a real-world movement called transhumanism, is a wonder chip that we implant in our brains, thereby eliminating the need to hunch over physical electronics forever. But the price paid for this technological leap is a steep--when a global virus strikes the implants, the system failure is fatal.

We're connecting - and wasting time - on Twitter - San Jose Mercury News - 0 views

  •
Some have called Twitter "the 'Seinfeld' of the Internet - a Web site about nothing." And at first glance, this micro-blogging tool that connects users around the world through short bursts of real-time text messages can seem mindlessly superficial.

Why Free Software has poor usability, and how to improve it (Matthew Paul Thomas) - 0 views

  •
When I wrote the first version of this article six years ago, I called it "Why Free Software usability tends to suck". The best open source applications and operating systems are more usable now than they were then. But this is largely from slow incremental improvements, and low-level competition between projects and distributors. Major problems with the design process itself remain largely unfixed.

Yahoo s New Build Your Own Search Engine Nips at Google s Lead - Webmonkey - 0 views

  •
Ever wanted to take a crack at making a better version of the Yahoo search engine? Now's your chance. Yahoo announced a new initiative Thursday called Build Your Own Search Service, or BOSS. It's a set of programming tools developers can use to tailor Yahoo's search index for their own use. As part of the program's launch, Yahoo is making its web, news and images index available to developers immediately. BOSS will allow developers who sign up for a public API key to manipulate rankings and the overall appearance of the search pages, as well as create mashups of the data with other data sources.

The coolest bits of classroom tech I've ever seen | Education IT - 0 views

I met with a representative from Turning Technologies today. While many of you may have had the opportunity to use interactive response systems (so-called "clickers"), we're finally moving into the 21st century; now that we have reasonable computing facilities at all of our schools, our goal is to fully utilize them and add interactivity. Thus, these interactive response systems that allow students to answer questions and take surveys in class with their aggregated responses displayed within a PowerPoint presentation or on a standalone unit. The real beauty of Turning's system is its direct integration with PowerPoint (sorry, no OpenOffice integration, although the software can be superimposed over any Mac or Windows software). It includes a dedicated toolbar and a series of macros for automating the creation of interactive slides.

The Wisdom of Repugnance - 0 views

"The president's call for a moratorium on human cloning has given us an important opportunity. In a truly unprecedented way, we can strike a blow for the human control of the technological project, for wisdom, prudence and human dignity. The prospect of human cloning, so repulsive to contemplate, is the occasion for deciding whether we shall be slaves of unregulated progress, and ultimately its artifacts, or whether we shall remain free human beings who guide our technique toward the enhancement of human dignity.
