The Cornell Note Taking System - 1 views

  •
Another description of the Cornell System for Note-Taking. I see so many schools having students take notes, but I don't see a systemic approach to note-taking and the development of the skills necessary in being successful studying using notes. Why don't we set our students up for success more often with these kinds of systems?

Top 10 Best Gadgets of 2008 - Breakthrough Awards - Year's Best Toys - Popular Mechanics - 0 views

  •
The top ten breakthroughs of 2008 by Popular Mechanics is an incredible list. There are several that have potential impacts on education including the Amazon Kindel and the Livescribe Pulse Smartpen. I am fascinated with the smartpen, because I think it makes taking notes in a lecture setting potentially multidimensional (I can take my notes graphically, but also record what the instructor is saying about those notes).

QlipBoard - Voice anything. Share anywhere. - 2 views

Multimedia online note taking tool. Students can capture screen images, make audio recordings for notes, or write text notes to accompany drawings. These different media can then be organized into videos!  I envision it being similar to Evernote with more interaction capabilities and with the great addition of being able to create videos of the information gathered. I like this tool!

Research on Student Note-taking - 2 views

  •
An article by DeZure, Kaplan, and Deerman about implications for instructors about student note-taking. An interesting look at what research tells us about how students take notes, what they are able to remember and write down, mistakes that are commonly made, and what instructors can do to make their students more successful.

Is Technology Producing A Decline In Critical Thinking And Analysis? - 0 views

I think this post or article is incredibly flawed and lacks a lot of basis for the positions being advicated, but if you have a Diigo account, it is a great example of participatory nature of the internet. You can leave a note for other Diigo users. It would be a fantastic way for students to read something, include their notes, respond to each other, and discuss in class the next day.

Take a Minute to Collect Your Thoughts With Evernote - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Hi... - 1 views

  •
I've long used Evernote for my own personal notetaking on the web(although I have recently been migrating to Diigo for my online annotations), this post by Shawn Miller is such a great explanation of the tool that I'm going to move Evernote back into the forefront of my notetaking. I do love the mobile Evernote app on iPhone. It makes it very easy to not only take multiple kinds of notes (audio, text, image) but makes it easy to share those notes.

Amazon.com: How To Study In College Seventh Edition (9780618046720): Walter Pauk, Pauk:... - 0 views

Walter Pauk's book in which he outlines the cornell Note-taking system as well as other skills for being successful in studying. He indicates these are essential skills for success in college yet, I don't see high school intentionally supporting these kinds of curricula and skills.

Harvard University Press - Field Notes on Science and Nature - 1 views

  •
A slideshow from the book Field Notes on Science and Nature. I great example of some of the kinds of writing that scientists do. Great examples and a great place to have students to start making observations of their own about the things they see in the world around them. Students need to be allowed to make these same kinds of observations if we want to develop their interest and passion for math and science.

Teaching with Technology in the Middle: Diigo for Digital Writing Reflection - 2 views

  •
I love this idea and am unashamedly going to steal it to use. I think it's important to have students reflect on their writing and their work, what better place to do it than on the writing themselves with highlights and sticky notes  using Diigo, BRILLIANT!

Content For 2009 - 0 views

  •
Here is where you'll find the course content for Spring, 2009. Assignments are here. Syllabus is here. GEOGEBRA: Throughout the notes, you will find many GeoGebra applets.  These are interactive Java applets.  To activate them, just click on them, and wait for the applet to load.  If you're using Internet Explorer, you may have to click on the "Allow ActiveX control" warning bar at the top of your browser, for the applet to load.  I encourage you to download GeoGebra yourself, or use the "Web Start" option, over at http://www.geogebra.org .  It's very easy to use, and a lot of fun!

Top News - Podcast trumps lecture in one college study - 0 views

  •
another example of looking at the transmission of data from teacher to student differently in the age of technology. Teachers must realize that it's not just saying the information, but allowing students opportunities to interact with the material, and in lecture situations, teachers must create opportunities for students to interact. In high school, especially, it is important that teachers understand the model that they are used to doesn't work and that they must prepare students to be able to take valuable notes that in which they make connections to.

Mr. Greer's ISN page. Nice example of how to set it up for kids. I really like these two boxes on the page: Why use an interactive notebook? 1. Students use both their visual and linguistic intelligences 2. Note-taking becomes an active process 3. Notebooks help students to systematically organize as they learn 4. Notebooks become a portfolio of individual learning Personal Response Instructions 1. Summarize the new information you have learned from the activity/presentation 2. Relate or connect this new learning to what you previously knew about the topic 3. Tell how you feel about what you have learned. At least 3 paragraphs are needed to meet the expectations for this assignment.

Scholar - 0 views

Blackboard is finally taking their scholar function public. Bookmarking for research/instructional purposes i.e. Diigo and Delicious. Good funtionality- notes, highlighting, sharing, groups, tag clouds for classroom sharing. Blackboard kills me, they have huge market share and are just now realizing this would be a good tool, ug. Have to recognize it because so many colleges, high schools have access to it.
