SkyDrive: What's new - 1 views

  •
Microsoft is working to make SkyDrive bigger, faster, and more useful. I've had my skydrive account for a year and haven't used it. Is it too late for this considering Dropbox has such a large lead and is already embedded?  I do like that the online versions of the Microsoft Office Suite seem to be getting better, faster, and with more features. I think I'll need to work on making this a testing priority for myself over the next few months.

boyd: Taking the Pulse of Social Networks - Microsoft Research - 0 views

  • I’ve been enamored with all forms of social media since I was a teenager. The whole reason I got into computers and went on to study computer science was that I was fascinated by the ability that computers had to connect people.
  • I started visualizing large data sets of networks, but I was really interested in the people in those networks.
  •
Great example that social networking is not just playing.
  •
Another example that conceptualizing the network helped draw her to the engineering field.

OK, I'm not an artist but I SEE this as a tool for writing to learn and writing to publish. I think it would allow students to express their understandings in different ways and then be able to share to a wide audience. If you have a pentab computer this would be an awesome tool to use with kids, because it's easier to export than microsoft journal drawings.

Federal Reserve Economic Data - FRED - St. Louis Fed - 0 views

  •
Want to let students explore with real data then welcome to FRED® (Federal Reserve Economic Data), a database of 25,176 U.S. economic time series. With FRED® you can download data in Microsoft Excel and text formats and view charts of data series. Students can explore data, create models & hypothesis, and test their models as the year progresses. If their models aren't working they can go back to their original data set and make changes based on what they've learned and see how those predictions work on new data. The best part is the variety of data that is available.  We plan to continually improve FRED® and encourage you to send feedback through our contact form.

Interesting image zooming tool from Microsoft. Doesn't do much other than create a zoomable image that can be embedded in other sites. If you have big/high quality images then this might be a very valuable tool, but if you are taking and using lesser quality, it's not worth the effort.

Smartboard Templates - 0 views

These templates require the Smart Notebook software, Kidspiration. Inspiration,Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and KidPix to use. Most have a preview for you to decide if it is something you would like. I would suggest creating folders on your desktop called SmartNoteBookTemplates, InspirationTemplates, and KidspirationTemplates. You can then save the templates in the appropriate folder for later use.

Microsoft WorldWide Telescope Web Client - 0 views

  •
Directly from Time Magazine: "Like Google Earth for the heavens, WWT aggregates terabytes of astronomical data from the world's biggest telescopes to create a single virtual scope that anyone can look through. WWT is not a model of the known universe, but rather a centralized repository for just about everything known about the universe. The idea is to democratize the science of astronomy with a single tool that can be used by students and scientists. Who knows, when everyone has access to the same data, maybe the next big discovery in astronomy will be made by an amateur? There are hundreds of terabytes of digitized sky - enough data for everyone. "
