Free or "Malayang" software is a human right | Association for Progressive Communications - 0 views

  •
"Author's name: Sarah Escandor-Tomas Philippines Free software is a human right. Freedom to run the software. Freedom to study and change the software. Freedom to redistribute. Freedom to redistribute with changes. The four freedoms that define free software have become essential human rights that must never be taken away from anyone except as a punishment for wrongdoing. Human rights depend on each other; if you lose one human right it becomes hard to defend the others. [...] With non-free software all your other human rights become hard to defend."

Software Piracy and Linux Adoption by Arne Rogde Gramstad :: SSRN - 0 views

  •
"Arne Rogde Gramstad University of Oslo, Department of Economics, Students February 5, 2016 Abstract: The open-source software operating system Linux is a free-of-charge substitute to proprietary systems like Microsoft Windows. By using a cross-country data set, this paper finds evidence that increased piracy of proprietary software has a negative impact on adoption of desktop versions of Linux. The interpretation of this result is that the availability of pirated versions of Windows leads to fewer individuals installing a Linux operating system on their desktop computers. Thus, in the absence of software piracy, Linux would be a more widely used operating system. Number of Pages in PDF File: 11 Keywords: Open-source software, software piracy, intellectual property JEL Classification: L11, L17, O34"

Beware of Contradictory "Support" - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation - 0 views

  •
"by Richard Stallman There are organizations that proclaim support for free software or the GNU Project, and teach classes in use of nonfree software. It's possible that they do some other things that really support free software, but those classes certainly don't. On the contrary, they work directly against the free software movement by promoting the use of the nonfree software. That increases the magnitude of the practical problem it is our mission to correct."

The readers of the IEEE Software Blog already know what open source software is, and many have probably written some. How can I be sure that anyone reading this even holds the belief about to be debunked?"

Open source code is not enough | Opensource.com - 0 views

"Automotive software issues, such as the Jeep hack and Volkswagen cheating on emissions tests, have made headlines this year, which means the public is thinking about software in cars like never before. Some experts have argued that mandating that such software be open source is a solution to the problem. Although there are definite benefits to public scrutiny of the software, code visibility alone is no guarantee. As Sam Liles explained to me in a recent email, open source code didn't prevent ShellShock."

The organization actively encourages people to snitch on software pirates, luring them with big cash rewards. Amusingly, however, the page where people can report unlicensed software is using 'unlicensed' jQuery code."
