Michael Sampson: Review Comments on CMSWatch's "The SharePoint Report 2008" - 0 views

  • if an organization doesn't get these things right, then whether they are using what many see as the "old Notes" or the "new SharePoint", disaster will result. The inherent flexibility of both platforms means that they can be used for great ends and to return great business and individual user benefits, or that same flexibility can result in really bad things happening. Many organizations have been down that route already with Notes, and many organizations are looking at SharePoint as a way of magically fixing all of those issues. It's not going to happen, because the key isn't in the technology ... it's in how it is introduced, embraced, talked about, trained on, and more. In general, if you can't get it right in Notes, you won't get it right in SharePoint
  • two independent analyst firms have issued warnings about SharePoint in the last two months. I hope organizations are taking note

Sharepoint and Enterprise 2.0: The good, the bad, and the ugly | Enterprise Web 2.0 | Z... - 1 views

  • the Enterprise 2.0 story is primarily aimed at knowledge workers engaged in complex, collaborative projects which have had few effective software tools until recently, in other words strategic business activities. Industries like finance, government, civil engineering, transportation, and many others are trend to be top heavy with this kind of worker and are likely the last major bastions of productivity gains in modern economies, if the right solutions can be brought to bear. In other words, Enterprise 2.0 can help some of our most important and most valuable workers do better work while providing more value to the organization as a whole.
  • innovation in social and collaborative systems is almost exclusively coming from the consumer Web
  • SharePoint was designed before we had learned many of the modern social computing lessons
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • excessively complex
  • weak support for the most common Enterprise 2.0 application types
  • multi-level security, governance, and policy controls
  • more difficult than with other platforms which were designed to function in highly diverse environments
  • Users should be able to create sites
  • customize them over time to meet the local requirements
  • evolve and improve through shared contributions
  • complexity and high cost
  •
i wouldn't mind training people in how to use this...

      OpenID comes to mind.
  • cumbersome and incomplete integration
  • "Whether it’s the lack of a workflow-based provisioning process, or enterprise-level administration, or the ability to effectively categorize large numbers of documents or PowerPoint slides, SharePoint remains ill-suited to enterprise-wide collaboration and knowledge management,"

SharePoint's Shining Star is Not Its Customer Support - 3 views

  • Microsoft’s SharePoint support is the lowest-ranked aspect of product deployment (23% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied)
  • It’s not the tools and training that are at issue, but the ongoing operational support that is required after deployment
  • little documentation

Mediawiki-- rawiriblundell.com - 0 views

  • It’s important, I think, for the Open Source community to recognise that there needs to be a collation of tools to make that one killer app - straying away from the “do one thing and do it well” mentality, sure, but that’s where things seem to be headed. Mediawiki + Unobtrusive Sidenotes + a good WYSIWYG editor + some way to integrate with OpenOffice/KOffice + an email interface for email-to/from-wiki + good RSS Feeds + LDAP/AD Authentication + iCalendar (or some wikiable calendar) + exporting to PDF + whatever else as one package will provide some really stiff competition to Sharepoint, which is only improving in integration with Office with the upcoming 2007 release. You could probably use a bit of AJAX to do a number of the extras. Something like Confluence. Without of course taking Mediawiki too far down the same path as Sharepoint - it’s important that at its core, Mediawiki remains a wiki and not a bastardised spawn-of-wiki-CMS.

Google Apps Roulette, Round 2 | ZDNet - 3 views

  • The real value proposition here comes from the absolute ease with which complete, ready-to-use solutions to a variety of business problems can be added to an existing Google Apps deployment
  • While Sharepoint and the countless Windows applications that already exist offer powerful solutions, Google Apps and its Marketplace offer nearly unbeatable simplicity in the cloud.
