The International Bottled Water Association's (IBWA) consumer website www.bottledwatermatters.com has launched its twentieth YouTube video, "Every Bottle Counts," a humorous and informative look at how people recycle when they are out and about in public places. A teenaged consumer explores how, when and where to recycle her empty PET plastic bottled water containers as she moves through her busy day away from home. In this short video, many U.S. communities from coast to coast that currently have public recycling programs in place are cited. Each of these communities listed report that public space recycling programs either make money or save money for their community treasuries as they make it easier for people to fully recycle unwanted bottles, cans and containers while away from home.

Drinking water regulations are designed to protect the public health. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is tasked with developing and maintaining drinking water regulations for the 276,607,387 people served by the country's 54,293 community water systems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled water as a food product. By federal law, the FDA's regulations for bottled water must be at least as protective of public health as the EPA's regulations for public water system drinking water. Despite many similarities in EPA and FDA regulations, consumer perception regarding the safety of drinking waters varies widely. This paper examines and compares the microbial health risks of tap water and bottled water, specifically examining differences in quality monitoring, regulatory standards violations, advisories, and distribution system conditions. It also includes comparison data on the number of waterborne illness outbreaks caused by both tap and bottled water. Based on a review of existing research, it is clear that as a consequence of the differences in regulations, distribution systems, operating (manufacturing) practices, and microbial standards of quality, public drinking water supplies present a substantially higher human risk than do bottled waters for illness due to waterborne organisms.

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) has been awarded the APEX 2017 Award of Excellence for its bimonthly magazine, Bottled Water Reporter. The publication, which competed against more than 300 entrants in the category for magazines, journals, and tabloids, is the only trade magazine in the nation that exclusively covers the bottled water industry-America's No. 1 packaged beverage-reporting on trends, issues, and innovations. IBWA Publications Manager Sabrina Hicks said this was the first year the trade association entered its magazine in the international competition, which evaluates communications publications on criteria such as graphic design, quality of editorial content, and the success of the entry in conveying the message and achieving overall communications effectiveness.

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) today issued the following statement regarding legislation expected to be introduced by San Francisco Board of Supervisors Chairman, David Chiu, to ban the sale of bottled water in plastic bottles of 21 fluid ounces or less, on public property including parks, concerts, large public events, and mobile food trucks.

Myth: MOST BOTTLED WATER IS JUST TAP WATER IN A BOTTLE. Fact: It is important to note that purified bottled water is not just tap water in a bottle. Once the municipal source water enters the bottled water plant several processes are employed to ensure that it meets the purified or sterile standard of the U.S. Pharmacopeia 23rd Revision. These treatments can include ozonation, reverse osmosis, distillation, or de-ionization. The finished water product is then placed in a bottle under sanitary conditions and sold to the consumer. Some anti-bottled water activists imply that people may be unaware that they are consuming bottled water that is from a municipal water source and has been placed in a bottle without being purified. As stated above, this is not the case. If a bottled water product's source is a public water system and the finished bottled water product does not meet the FDA Standard of Identity for purified or sterile water, the product label must disclose the public water system source.
