Aywas: Collectible Creatures Online - 0 views

  •
Let's just reveal everything about my regular online life, lol. I play a lot of 'virtual pet' sites, where you collect little creatures, but Aywas is one that stands out a lot. In the spirit of participatory media, it's a very different kind of participation from the usual kind of pet site. Aywas encourages users to create their own pets by colouring them in with sophisticated art programs (such as Photoshop) and submitting them. In turn, these pets are then eligible to be 'bred' with pets other users have made, and a site artist will mix and match the designs on both parent pets to create a new one. It's a very interesting concept and heavily user dependent for participation. If you're interested, shoot me a message at user ID #6429 and I can get you started!

This article brings up a good point when discussing the negative ad positive sides of media convergence. I agree with certain points from both sides. On the negative side I agree that not all voices are taken into account, only those with access to new media. On the positive side I agree that the input that is given from voices heard helps improve services and generates awareness.
  • uggesting that media audiences nowadays play a crucial role in creating and distributing content,
  • decline in the diversity of material offered and result in a tendency that voices of those lacking economic power will not be taken into account

What Constitutes Good and Bad Web Design? - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Bad design can be infuriating, inconvenient or damaging in any field.
  • a well-designed Web site needs to deliver the same things as most other examples of good design by fulfilling its intended function efficiently and engagingly.
  • A common mistake is to prioritize style over substance
    • ilana enoukov

An example of this is animation ; though it looks great it takes ages to upload, thus making the visitor furious
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • principal problem with many Web sites is that their designers were neither rigorous nor imaginative enough in planning the way we will navigate them
  • If you find information swiftly and easily on a Web site, its designer has succeeded. But if you need to click on an inordinate number of buttons and links, or dither over what to do next, the designer has failed
  • Amazon’s site scores highly for navigational efficiency, but poorly in terms of the second criterion of good Web design, because it is far from engaging.

  • Consistency is the key when getting started with web design. Are you learning everyday? Are you applying whatever new concepts you learn at least three times a week? Learning a little bit everyday is way better than covering a lot of material in just one day of the week.

  • To summarize, a visitor sees the headlines they want to read, view the summary, and click through to your site to read the rest of the news, either in a new window, or without having to leave the application they are in. And when you update again, the reader will notify them that you have new headlines, and/or populate the list of items you have available. This can keep your audience coming back. It is so easy you would be crazy not to do it!
