Part 2 of this free online resourse focuses again on the need of students to belong but this time explores building strong and positive staff/student relationships to prevent classroom management issues. It even includes a link to a fun "get to know you" survey you can have your students complete! Knowing your students (their likes, dislikes and triggers) and establishing postive relationships is perhaps the most important step in preventing classroom management issues.

Ontario Certified Teacher, Elona Hartjes (winner of a Teacher of Distinction Award), talks in her blog about some of the research behind using music in the classroom to promote student productivity. She relates it towards personal audio devices (ie. ipods) but this information is easily translateable to playing a CD in your classroom as well. There are a number of classroom management ideas presented at this site which is geared towards substitute teachers and therefore are not about how you want to set up your perfect classroom but more about how to gain and maintain control over a class of students that have never seen you before. Some really good suggestions here.

Since many of us may be venturing in to the substitute teaching role at the beginning of our careers, I thought this was a great site that organized classroom management strategies based on grade levels for substitute teachers. There is everything from effective tips to strategies for gaining attention. There are also great links in the left hand column for books that kids love, curriculum activities and games, discipline techniques as well as interview tips and questions.

This small collection of short videos gives examples of simple, yet effective classroom management techniques. Although they are shown in mostly younger grades, I think most of them can be used in the upper grades or modified to be suitable. I really like the sign language one!

This site provides a powerpoint presentation of the classroom rules found in Ron Clark's book "The Essential 55" (http://tinyurl.com/2fg7on8). Ron Clark is a famous American teacher who received the 2001 Disney Teacher of the Year Award, is the founder of the Ron Clark Academy (http://www.ronclarkacademy.com/about.aspx), and his life is featured in the film "The Ron Clark Story" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473389/). The rules here focus not only on developing and managing a classroom environment, but also encourage students to be courteous and contributing members of society. I highly recommend his book for the explanations of and the stories behind each rule. Pick and choose the ones you like!

This site offers a list of common classroom management mistakes that new teachers often make. Written by Dr. Bob Kizlik, this list provides new teachers tips on what to avoid when starting out in the classroom.

This is a site that provides you with additional links for tips about effective classroom management. It talks about routines, procedures, rules, choice, planning, and class participation. In the additional links, there are lists of everything you would need a routine or procedure for (in case some things slip our minds). It also has a few activities that you could use with the students to help enforce these concepts, such as acting out the rules or the opposite of the rule. By doing this, it would really give the students concrete examples of what to do and what not to do.
