10 Children's Books About Math | Delightful Children's Books - 0 views

  • The theme here is fun math books. Thus, if a book says something like “this is a division sign,” you will not find the book on this list. These books get kids thinking about numbers and problem solving in neat ways without realizing that they are learning math.

Kitchen math and science | The Rhode Show - 0 views

  • As children, most of us were told not to play with our food. However, when appropriately approached food can be a useful tool to teach children math and science. Science and math are throughout your house indoors and outdoors, especially in the kitchen.

The 11 Ways That Consumers Are Hopeless at Math - Derek Thompson - The Atlantic - 2 views

  • The flip-side is that bargains literally make us feel good about ourselves. Even the most useless junk in the world is appealing if the price feels like a steal.
  •
Some interesting consumer math points that apply to us all -- teachers, students, and broader community.  How can we help our students (and our own minds!) grasp these points?

{Musing Mathematically}: Measuring Roots - 0 views

  • For many students, no matter their age, math begins with an answer. You then form a question, jeopardy style, to help disguise the number.
  • Most students learn to expect math questions and problems to be short, quick, to the point, solvable and structured around "clean" answers (often related in some way to integer components). They anticipate the answers before they anticipate the questions. I am not sure if they even consider the math.
  • They completely miss the point and the empowering strength of math process and pattern.
  •
This is a spectacular posting that could be used with ES or MS students (or possibly HS students, too) to explore square roots.

What goes into mathematical thinking? - 0 views

  •
"So, learning math is somewhat like learning to read: we can do it, but it takes time and effort, and requires mastering increasingly complex skills and con- tent. Just about everyone will get to the point where they can read a serious newspaper, and just about everyone will get to the point where they can do high school-level algebra and geometry-even if not everyone wants to reach the point of comprehending James Joyce's Ulysses or solving partial differential equations."

Are after-school math centers really worth the money? - Magazine - The Boston Globe - 0 views

  • “One stereotype we have not been able to break in the United States is that ‘faster is smarter,’ ”
  • “Sometimes it’s the person who is more reflective and introspective about thinking through the problem and might take a little longer to get to the answer who illustrates more understanding of the mathematics involved.”
  • students learn math best when the focus is on exploration and understanding, not just regurgitation and computation

Musing Mathematically: Linear Functions With A Bang - 0 views

  •
A mathematical focus, but also great commentary on teacher hesitancy regarding math. Reform is NOT about "high-energy teachers [giving] vague tasks to groups of interested students."

dy/dan » Blog Archive » The Comprehensive Math Assessment Resource - 3 views

  • If you'd like to see assessment amount to more than a meaningless exercise in classroom control, if you'd like to see cheating drop and confidence rise, if you'd like to see a higher correlation between the grade you feel a student deserves and the grade on that student's transcript … … take something from this page.
  •
A collection of truly insightful musings on assessment, whether you teach math or something else.
  •
Chris, I definitely think this process for assessment could be utilized in other disciplines quite easily. The idea of student ownership is a huge factor for motivating students. The parent involvement seems to be a positive aspect, too. Thank you so much for keeping us all aware of innovative practices happening in education. Karen Anderson

  •
I don't know all the places this could be used, but the graph in this article contains a STUNNING amount of information. I think the math is obvious, but I envision some phenomenal social science lessons, technology insights, the evolution of science, the implied connections to the ability of societies to spread information, the differences in cost of the various innovations and why that matters .... Hope you find something cool.

  • I petitioned my counselor to let me skip Algebra II and Pre-Calc to go straight into AP Calculus.
  • A common problem throughout math education is the "When am I ever going to use this?" attitude. I already knew where I was going to use the math I was learning.

What a great math hook for a middle school class! Thx to John Burk for the lead!
  •
This is so great! What a fun teacher! Great way to talk about proportions. Love the terminology and the kids using the language, "can we rank their mulletude"? Hey, did the better looking mullets have a Business to Party (or Party to Business?) ratio that was, "Golden"?
