Google Apps Marketplace - EDU - 10 views

  •
Check this out. The education technology space has seen an explosion of new offerings in the past few years. What has been missing is a centralized platform for schools and universities to easily evaluate and utilize web apps. Today we are excited to launch an education category in the Google Apps Marketplace designed specifically to help schools and universities easily discover and deploy new web applications that integrate with their existing Google Apps accounts. The new education category includes over 20 applications from 19 vendors ranging from learning management systems (LMS) to student tools and teaching aids - all of which integrate with Google Apps for Education. Each app can be accessed through single sign-on and the Google universal navigation bar and many offer deeper integrations that synchronize with Google Calendar and Documents.

App Inventor for Android - 3 views

  •
You can build just about any app you can imagine with App Inventor. Often people begin by building games like WhackAMole or games that let you draw funny pictures on your friend's faces. You can even make use of the phone's sensors to move a ball through a maze based on tilting the phone. But app building is not limited to simple games. You can also build apps that inform and educate. You can create a quiz app to help you and your classmates study for a test. With Android's text-to-speech capabilities, you can even have the phone ask the questions aloud. To use App Inventor, you do not need to be a developer. App Inventor requires NO programming knowledge. This is because instead of writing code, you visually design the way the app looks and use blocks to specify the app's behavior.

WOW, self pace lessons accompanied by the Khan Academy videos. Works with Google Apps and teachers can become "coaches" for the students to run reports on their progress totally free. Looks like it will grow in math and then to science, just a guess b/c of the Google Sky use. Please check this out especially if you have Google Apps in your district.

  • As the project got underway, there was considerable interest in seeing the how similarly K-12 and higher education were viewing emerging technology. As it turned out, there is a considerable overlap, but there are also clear distinctions.
  • collaborative environments and online communication tools
  • barriers such as policy constraints on using online tools, the fact that many students do not bring laptops to school (as opposed to many college students, who do), and policies that restrict Internet access in many schools.

I hope so. But, as I travel around the state I'm still seeing schools blocking wikis and blogs - even in IU buildings where the only users are adults! The fear of lawsuits is palpable! What we need is a news-worthy crisis to make us take this seriously.
  • Multi-touch interfaces, GPS capability, and the ability to run third-party applications make todayโ€™s mobile device an increasingly flexible tool that is readily adapted to a wide range of tasks for social networking, learning, and productivity.
  • Collaborative work, research, social networking, media sharing, virtual computers: all are enabled by applications that live in the cloud.
