IASC: The Hedgehog Review - Volume 14, No. 1 (Spring 2012) - Why Google Isn't... - 0 views

  •
A very interesting journal essay that points out how info overload is not a new problem, but one that has existed ever since the first books. The writer examines how people in the previous centuries used the then-new technology of printing to help them handle the "plague of books" that was overwhelming their libraries. He then reminds us, that at the core of it all, it is not the technology itself that enables and empowers learning, but an ecology of human-tech interaction that helps us learn more effectively in today's Toffler-esque world. A fascinating read indeed. A more readable PDF version: http://www.iasc-culture.org/THR/archives/Spring2012/Wellmon_lo.pdf

PDFs Become Contextually Amazing With Scribd's Apture Integration - 0 views

  • Above, you can see an image of my screen while reading a PDF titled The Internet of things: Networked objects and smart devices. I highlighted the name of a company quoted in the report and with two quick clicks I was watching a YouTube video of a product demo. I highlighted an expert's name and was able to learn all about their career and find them on Twitter - without leaving the page.
  • Scribd says it's working on a native iPad experience for its service, but that won't arrive until later this year or next year.

Folksonomy (tagging) is 1 of 3 categorizations of Web 2.0 tools. This article from the "Handbook of Research on New Media Literacy at the K-12 level" provides clear definition and powerful application of tagging activities. • Explain Everything has been a top paid education app since its release in Australia, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Finland.
  • Import PDF, PPT, DOC, XLS, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and RTF files from Evernote, Dropbox, Box, GDrive, WebDAV, Email, iTunes, and any app that allows you to open these files types using "Open In…". Export MP4 movies, PDF documents, PNG images, or XPL project files directly from your iPad.
  •
This seems to be the granddaddy of mVideo and mAPT. But for now, from what I can see, it still works on a post-processing scale - i.e. record, and THEN annotate, not allowing you to add comments or tags in real-time. (Yet.) But it seems like a very good source of revenue, offering educational licenses, etc.
  •
If you or anyone like to try out the apps, ETs have bought this app. It's from Ashley's Christmas gift card.
