Mr Edmund Lim's teaching and learning journey - 8 views

  •
Was chatting with a pri-school teacher friend of mine yesterday, and he casually mentioned that he had created his own e-portfolio using Google Sites too. I checked his e-portfolio out and I found it very inspiring - all the more since it's a classic showcase of what an e-portfolio can be - and one done by one of our own working Singaporean school teachers some more. :) Hopefully this example should help towards dispelling the misconception that e-portfolios are a high-tech "waste of time" that only adds extra to a teacher's workload.
  •
Excellent find. It's something to showcase should anyone ask for examples of non-LMS type e-portfolios.

Why Do Some People Learn Faster? | Wired Science | Wired.com - 2 views

  •
I llike my friend's summary: "The way we think affects the way we learn. If we think we passed a test because we're "smart", then we don't work so hard and learn less. If we think we passed a test because we "worked hard", then we work harder and learn more. And if we think making mistakes helps us learn (instead of making us look stupid), then we tend to learn more." I think this is one major reason why children can learn and master tough games so fast, but take forever to solve a Maths test problem.

Contemplative Computing - 0 views

  • So can computers actually help improve our concentration and contemplation, instead of leading us into distraction? The problem, as Pang puts it, is that "Technologies that were supposed to help us think better, work more efficiently, and connect more meaningfully with others now interrupt us, divide our attention, and stretch us thin."
  • In the paper he outlines give principles of contemplative computing; Build awareness through DIY and self-experimentation Recognize that we are cyborgs, and humans Create rewarding challenges Support mind-wandering Treat flow as a means, not an end
  • Pang suggests that we don't have to choose between information technology and contemplation, and suggests contemplative computing as a new way forward. He describes contemplative computing as something you do, not a product. But the principles of contemplative computing could be extending to application design. "The problem is that today's information technologies are often poorly-designed and thoughtlessly used: they're like unreliable prosthetics that we have to depend on, but can't quite control or trust," Pang says.

  • You might be surprised to see "support mind wandering" on the list. But Pang makes a distinction between mind wandering and distraction, and points out the value creative value of mind wandering and day dreaming (for more on this subject, check out this article by Jonah Lehrer, though Lehrer doesn't really make the distinction between distraction and mind wandering).
  •
A fascinating post on "contemplative computing", where computing can be used to facilitate and even enhance creative education/workflow process... where the software would allow you to try out multiple versions of a music composition / essay / video seamlessly... while enabling you to wander around exploring on relevant topics on Wikipedia without getting distracted off-topic! :)

YouTube - ‪Predator: A Visual Tracker that Learns from its Errors‬‏ - 0 views

I just happened to think: Imagine if this pattern-recognition tech concept could be adapted to mobile phones in the near future, it might make for a very powerful blended learning / augmented reality tool. :) According to the researcher, implementation for mobile devices is feasible. Possible applications for m-learning could be: gestural recognition, dynamic object association and the like. E.g. If we could use an iPhone/Kinect to track a student's movements and remotely control an external apparatus halfway across the globe (maybe explore an Amazonian jungle to study biodiversity first-hand), or help disabled students (maybe cerebral palsy sufferers) communicate their thoughts more clearly... or perhaps get the students to "air-sketch" Chinese/Tamil characters to produce music on the go... qr code generator tracking - Google Search - 4 views

  •
Search results for finding QR code generators that offer tracking services. This might help us determine how many people actually scan the QR codes.
  •
CreateBuzz QR Code creates 2 types of QR Codes. One is normal, and the other is trackable. The trackable QR Code has a different URL. When it is read, it is actually reading the trackable URL which then redirects to the page that was defined initially. Quick tests on several devices and QR Code readers show that some QR Code readers did not do the re-direction. Hence these scans were not tracked. Alternatively, use bit.ly because it tracks clicks. Use the shorten URL to generate the QR Code. Any scan to the QR Code which points to the shorten URL will be recorded. It shows the time the scans were done and region as well.

1 | CollabFinder Wants To Make Hackathons A Part Of College Life | Co.Design: business ... - 0 views

  • A growing list of schools are turning to the "serendipity engine" to help students find cross-discipline collaborators for passion projects.
  • finding a cross-disciplinary collaboration is tougher--most of us are more likely to head to a meetup or networking event to fish for someone outside of our skill set. That’s fine, but it’s not a very efficient way to find exactly what you’re looking for.
  •
Interesting! What if we could do something similar - a website where collaborators can gather from all over the world to work on e-learning strategies and applications?

Simple Techniques for Applying Active Learning Strategies to Online Course Videos | Fac... - 2 views

    • Rachel Tan

Dr Ashley, I agree with you and posting a question at the beginning of the video is an excellent strategy. That is how I learn. I need to know the question upfront so that I know what to pay attention to in the video.
  • Embed short graded or self-assessments either in the video itself, or at the end of each video. Including one or two multiple-choice questions or requests to post to a forum—either between scenes (using a post-production editing tool such as Camtasia or Captivate) or after the video—alerts students to the “take homes” they should be getting from the material. It also helps teachers assess, at point of contact, whether students understand the major concepts.
    • Rachel Tan

This (self assessment) is absolutely necessary to give learning a chance to happen, as we develop open learning courses. This applies to Google Sites training resources out there.

  • Customize your site and your landing page for your social media account if the site permit it.  Do what you can to stand out from those around you.
  • Maintain quality over quantity.  It helps to join multiple networks but keep yourself limited to just a few so as not to get overwhelmed by updates.
  • Find out who is following you and showing interest.  Compare that demographic to your marketing plan and see how effective your strategy is.

App Store - eportfolio by CityU EDGE - 2 views

  •
I came across this ePortfolio iPhone app. It's content-rich and I think could be a good resource for our students to use.
  •
Does the app actually help create a mobile portfolio or is it just a handy reference on e-portfolios?
  •
A handy reference. There are other eportfolio iphone apps that do the creating of mobile eportfolios, such as Curtin University's iphone app. However, the problem is that those apps are specific to their eportfolio systems, so they are generally closed to non-university users. If I find one that is open (and uses open systems), I'll share here ASAP.

This and the previous resource are nice finds! I shared them on Twitter and the facilitator who helped us with our Google Workshop for Educators (GWE) commented that they were excellent tutorials.
  •
Thanks Bernard! After looking at the code, it's almost perfect except for one thing: we need to store the form on our own server. (But yes, the Google spreadsheet linked to the form should still be updated automagically.) Would it be ok to use CeL's own server to host our own HTML pages for this purpose?
  •
If it's CeL services or related materials, having it in CeL server is not an issue. example : e-Fiesta 2012 registration page. For personal usage or for AGs I advise the htmls to be stored on their own server space.
