Perceptions of Social Loafing in Online Learning Groups: A study of Public University a... - 4 views

What a great term: social loafing. I've never heard it before, but upon reading this article, realised I've experienced it often enough. Thanks.
  •
It's the first time i've heard of this term also. Very different from the term lurking. A little lengthy but worth the skim over.

Kaine Very interesting article. I think it exists. I have perceived social loafing, definitely in my past online courses or at work. But I am not sure if that is true or not. What if I was also perceived as social loafer at the same time by others? Who is right then? Thanks for sharing it. I read and also bookmarked it. Ilona

Computer networks are bunch of interconnected PC or computers that facilitate the exchange of data or some other purposeful work. The first computer network to be designed was the "Advanced Research Projects Agency Network" (ARPANET) for the United States Department of Defense in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Why I'm Saying Goodbye to Twitter - 4 views

Canadian MP Charlie Angus quits Twitter. "Last weekend, I sent my last Twitter message: "Dear Twitter - Adios. Free at last. Free at last, Great God almighty I'm free at last."

It has been documented that Twitter and texting in general causes an addictive response in the human brain .
  •
I have the feeling that despite what he says now, Charlie will be back on Twitter. Maybe using an Avatar? Hard for a Twitter addict with plenty to say on the issues of the day to go cold turkey I would think?
  •
I agree, and expand on it, avatars are an interesting twist on leading a double life or triple or quadruple... hard to maintain integrity with the multiple personalities. I opted out of twitter because of the research on addictiveness to it, even though it was one of the course venues. Same reason I don't have a cel.! call me at home if I am out I am unreachable and living my life elsewhere.

The more freedom and self directed learning the better I say, but what about bona fide credentials for the stiff upper lips of the world? This is a great site with step by step and tutorials. It all starts with research and wanting and learning to learn...

Education as a complex adaptive system? - Casting Out Nines - The Chronicle of Higher E... - 1 views

  • If you look at some of the descriptors of a complex adaptive system, these are certainly not the descriptors of traditional, formal higher (or lower) education. Emergence, self-similarity, self-organization… doesn’t sound like the usual notion of college, does it? Indeed, it’s hard to conceptualize just how a complex adaptive systems model of education would be implemented at all. But perhaps that’s an indicator of failed thinking — must we think of education as something to be implemented? Or is it something that happens? Whatever the case, the authors argue it’s just such a system that is needed to support environments where learning by doing takes place and where engagement happens both inside and outside of a classroom.
  • education is an ecosystem, full of dynamically-connected multiple agents that move in a web of interactions that ultimately change the course of the system itself over time.
  • Our Santa Fe Institute and SRI Inc. research is attempting to model educational subsystem behaviors through the lens of complex adaptive systems to better conceptualize the current educational ecosystem.
