    thanks for sharing Roxana. I really like how this blog discusses the language and cultural uses of using voicethread to create learning communities. It provided me many practical examples I can use in my classroom to help students focus on langauge development while using the technology. This post puts the focus on learning not on the technology. The handouts are great supports that help students stay on the learning track and because of this, the coummunity of learning is built. I was a little concerned by the deficit language used on the scoring rubric for asynchronous content. I will probably use something similar by change the wording to be a little more constructive, as meaning can be lost online and harsh wording can be misinterpreted.

      We use iPads for games and other online learning apps on a regular basis.  Students have tracked their progress on apps only as far as getting so far = stickers/rewards.  Goal setting wasn't involved, nor were specific goals related to skills students needed to learn.  This could be a simple addition to our stations to make classroom learning with iPad apps more effective.

    We have a classroom set of iPads that are available. Students don't purchase them, the school got them through a grant.

    Very interesting! I like the idea of Flipping foreign language class. I think it gives students more opportunities to depend on themselves on learning. This helps them to be better learners.

      I like this idea, but wonder how it would look in a classroom where some students have extremely limited tech knowledge. Maybe pairing them up with other students and having them teach each other?

      I recently started exploring this app myself after finding it on the app store.  It is helpful to see someone else's use and get ideas! I think the most difficult part is going to be the part sharing students' work with the teacher.
  • For the “Introduction to Skitch” 2-day lesson, I gave the students a choice board of activities. The students had fun creating treasure maps, Skitch selfies, classroom maps.

    Digital storytelling is so awesome! I got a chance to create a digital story through the Minnesota Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute and it was an awesome experience. I'd highly recommend looking into your local branch of the National Writing Project to see what resources or professional development are available.

      I tried this activity by having each group research then report about an Arabic speaking country of their choice and the activity was a great success. They seemed to have had a lot of fun, presented short clear sentences (for the most part) that also provided factual and relevant material, and it opened the door for some spontaneous cultural themes and relevant dicussions.

      I've used some of the videos from UTexas. Some of the novice level videos are still too difficult for my middle schoolers though! I have to give lot's of scaffolding and support.

      These are great resources!
  • remember these rules when selecting activities: They must be authentic. They should always be engaging. Activities should be varied. They need to be focused around the unit theme. Perhaps most importantly, they should force students to use the target language.

    I vividly recall sitting in my son's Spanish classroom during an Open House back in 2011, listening to the teacher explain how they reviewed vocabulary and grammar during class. She reminded us of the importance of finding opportunities for students to listen to, and even better, speak the language outside of class.

      I love the idea. But....unfortunately, how many public schools can or would fund a bunch of ipads to use in the classroom? I believe this is an expense that should be used. but, here in TX we dont even have $$ for basics! :(

When we provide applications that let users manage information, and those users have limited to no awareness of knowledge organization for the Web, the information architectures that evolve for users and the entire system may be less than optimal. Since most users are not equipped to produce sound classification schemes or efficient top-down taxonomies on their own, their impact on any system creates what I call a literacy gap, depicted in Figure 6.       The above excerpt reminds me of a collaborative review project that we did in my class at the end of the last school year. We broke down each unit and lesson that we had covered into chunks and each student was supposed to make virtual flashcards (on quizlet.com) with their chunk of the material. Some students did great while others were absolutely lost while using the computers. It had a deleterious effect on the overall project. As I try to imagine implementing more web resources with the goal of productive communication and interaction in L2, I am troubled by the disparity of web/computer literacy among students. I don't mean to sound negative, but it is something I really struggle with. What about the students who lack the necessary skills?

      Even when working with teachers, we find this in workshops.  We tend to pair/group teachers, so they can help each other out - have you tried that with students?

      Yes, I did assign pairs. Some students are smartphone literate and seem to have little to no interest in anything desktop. Hmmm...perhaps I should try focusing on the ipads.

      I think this is another great use of this tool and students can do this perhaps as an extra activity which will allow them to practice their new vocabulary without the pressure of receiving a grade for it. I also use this to create "Spanish in action" cartoons to embed in my announcements.

      I do have some concerns about privacy with G+, but I am still trying to weigh, in my mind, the benefits vs. the costs of using a slick app like G+ vs. something we already have access to behind a password like Moodle. I am also wondering if the quality of engagement is the same, better or worse than that found in a forum like Moodle.

      I like the fact that I can have control over the discussion and can edit student responses. Also, the fact that student's privacy is protected is great. If I wanted to, I could project my computer screen and the students could see their comments being posted in real time.
