Tools for Synchronous and Asynchronous Classroom Discussion - 9 views

  • Regardless of the tool or set of tools that you use, be sure your communication plan is clear to your students. Online communication does have rules, just like face-to-face communication. Set guidelines as well as expectations, and use only those tools that you’ve evaluated and which clearly enhance your teaching and student learning.

I'm happy to see this point emphasized yet again. Just because a tool is new and shiny doesn't mean it will help your students. Careful planning and a sound pedagogical rationale will, though.
  •
An article by Julie Meloni, published on the Chronicle of Higher Education's (now defunct) "ProfHacker" blog. Meloni offers a quick overview of the distinction between synchronous and asynchronous communication, and suggests ways to make use of both in the classroom.

Unfortunately, this article has been removed. But I like Jennifer's comment: "Just because a tool is new and shiny doesn't mean it will help your students. Careful planning and a sound pedagogical rationale will, though."

These are great. I learned about using streamyard.com to live stream any school event to a venue, such as YouTube. This could be useful even after Covid to allow parents to be a part of events that happen at school.

I'm a little embarrassed to confess I actually didn't know what Flipped Classroom was... If someone had the same problem here's a video that explains it nicely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCIxikOq73Q

Thank you for the video. I wasn't sure exactly what a flipped classroom looked and how it worked. Very helpful!
  •
We have used VoiceThread, I hope we will use a few more in the coming weeks. I noticed each said Free and some had paid with an i in a gray circle(?)
  •
I liked this list of applications (free and pay). Out of the thirty, I was only familiar with three: "VoiceThread", "Kahoot!", and "Screen-O- Matic".

I love this idea - I am not sure how to create it; ask me next week! I could see this being used as a way to teach culture and language!

I was drawn to this because the title was intriguing:) The idea of the app is an interesting one, although my first reaction in the example one here is that there are potentially a lot of stereotypes being (re)produced. I would be curious what you do with it!

I find this sentence important because it drives home the point that authentic resources can serve a variety of purposes, from "hooking the students" or activating global knowledge to complex assignments resulting in student presentations, etc. It's a good reminder that, rather than searching for that one perfect piece while under pressure to plan a lesson, it's a good idea to start a digital collection of materials that strike me as interesting.
  • Think of each authentic resource you have for a theme as a puzzle piece looking for its “best
  • fit.”

  • Gather responses globally — Create a Padlet with a question and post it on Twitter, a blog or other social media. (A hashtag like #comments4kids could help more people see it and respond.) See where in the world responses come from!

This is huge! Students can see and comment, all on one page.
  • Padlet allows for synchronous or asynchronous collaboration. Learners can share ideas, materials, audio and video.  They can then comment on these.

  • any level of learner. As learners add their own posts, what skill they develop depends on what task given is to them. Learners can develop writing skills (e.g. write a short description of a person you admire) or speaking skills (record yourself telling an anecdote). They can also brainstorm vocabulary related to a topic to activate existing knowledge before a reading or listening text. As learners all type their ideas at the same time, it’s an inclusive and efficient way of collecting ideas.
    • danigeary

For big classes, the right padlet activities allow the instructor to "eyeball" the content for grading.
  • For the teacher, Padlet helps them to better assess the learning of everyone in the class, something that can be tricky even with medium-sized classes.

I really like this concept!! Unfortunately we are not allowed to use flip-grid:(

Is it not available because of access (too much? you can set up so only students with your district's email can respond), or is it because of the possibility of kids using other kid's videos and images?

Thanks for sharing! I love her comment "The digital native is a myth." This is exactly what my colleagues and I have been noticing as our school went 1:1. Students understand how to use tech for social media and gaming but not as a tool for school.
