This easy-to-read introduction to SAMR (standing for "Substitution," "Augmentation," "Modification" and "Redefinition"), a model for helping integrate "technology tools into foreign-language classrooms," is blogged by a Chinese content and technology specialist who, I trust, has a lot of experience of incorporating media into Chinese learning activities. Besides clearly explaining how the SAMR model works for a L2 class via really useful tech tools such as Google Docs and Flipgrid, this blog also reveals a fact that our students "are not all 'digital natives,'" and encourages us, 21st-century educators, to "meet our students halfway to use tech for learning." I found the first two SAMR stages, namely, "Substitution" and "Augmentation," are very helpful for evaluating the interpretive mode implemented with appropriate media.

8. Movies — Tell a story 10 seconds at a time. Add short video clips to a story with each video as a scene in the “movie”. If students follow you, this could be a great, fun way for students to engage in content. They could craft their own Snapchat movies incorporating what they learn in your class. Teachers can create fun content that students will want to watch. Schools and school districts can do the same to tell about a sporting event or other community event.

If you’re using new technology, give it a trial run. It’s hard to imagine anything less engaging for students than sitting around waiting while you try to load that video over a poor internet connection or figure out all the glitches with that awesome online game.Do your trial and error ahead of time, before you’re demonstrating media to the class.

I don't think I can annotate this article because it is a Google book and has access limitations. I have worked with Dr. Christine Appel, one of the authors of the article "Synchronous tandem language learning in a MOOC context: A study on task design and learner performance". My main interest here is: "How can we best design online synchronous tasks to achieve the optimal outcome?". Sometimes we focus too much on the tool and not so much on how we can make the most of it. The article studies real tasks to find the effects task design have in student performance.

There are a number of National Foreign Language Center videos on YouTube. The NFLC videos (most are closed captions) are helpful for any language teachers. It offers different activities and ideas to get the students involved online/hybrid etc.

Thanks for sharing! I love her comment "The digital native is a myth." This is exactly what my colleagues and I have been noticing as our school went 1:1. Students understand how to use tech for social media and gaming but not as a tool for school.

At first glance, this might seem like a simple assignment, but it requires higher order thinking. It required students not just to understand the story of the character in question, but also to apply this understanding by retelling the story in their own (German) words. Students did not just demonstrate reading comprehension; the assignment forced them to identify key details in the story in order to make the story fit the limited number of panels available.
