Good discussion of "authenticity" -- what makes a text authentic or not?

"Authentic" appears to mean: naturally produced by authentic source for communication in a native setting. What concerns me is that the call for "authentic" dates back to perhaps 20 years ago? We are still claiming it is important, yet we scaffold authentic text often to the point that they loose their intrinsic challenge.

Great suggestions in this article for using Flipgrid. I really like the idea of keeping track of completed assignments (in my school that would be considered a Habit of Work as we do not grade homework anyhow) and perhaps using Flipgrid as part of a summative assessment at the end of the semester...lots of no stress practice and, by the time the assessment comes, they are all familiar with the technology.

Thanks for sharing this article! I liked the idea of different context and different identity :-) Sometimes students express themselves more comfortable at the beginning through the use of alternate identities. Specially if they have to video record themselves when they are learning the language.

My only concern is that how much the material they use in video can be authentic.

This article presents a research about the effects on integrating multimedia sources on second language vocabulary acquisition. The researchers exposed the language learners to different stimulus: video with audio and captions, video with audio, and video with captions and compare the results to analyze their effect on language acquisition.

The author of the blog sells products that help people learn languages better solo - she coaches independent language learners and online teachers. She has a blog on her website that talks mostly about her language studies how she uses online resources, not limited to but including SM.

What a simple way to provide for your students. Perhaps those of you teaching at the post secondary level already do this, but at the high school level we do not have office hours because it can't be built into our schedules. However, perhaps a bit of time each day may encourage a strong feedback loop.

I agree with the idea about assigning specific tasks for listening activities. There is nothing more confusing than not knowing what to do when listening to an audio in another language. What do you think would be best, to watch the entire movie in the classroom, watch some parts of it or watch all of it each o the students in their houses?

I have struggled pedagogically about showing moves in class. I think that I need to thoughtfully incorporate them because the students enjoy them. I wonder if showing the whole movie, but in parts, depending on the movie, might be the way to go - I always feel that there is so much pressure to get through 'X' amount of curriculum. This has given me food for thought about how I could use them.

Hi Anne! I also like to use infographics with my students even for me. I learn much better when I see images and graphics. I guess I am a visual learner and I always present content through images and charts of information.

Nice resources. I have not heard of Actively Learning. But I have used screenomatic and Edpuzzle together. It worked well.

Lots of good ideas. I would like to look into Actively Learning. Sounds like a great resource. Pear Deck is another one I would like to try. I agree that the virtual pen pals sounds like fun, as does having students text in Spanish and send you screenshots. They already have tons of personal experience with that already.

First I did not want to read this, because I feel unable to CREATE technology enhanced materials, but when I glanced at threarticle, it became easy to understand and do, most valuable and very possibly manageable with my limited understanding of technology. Wonderful!

Seems pretty formulaic - so a good place to start!

I like the features of padlet and have personally used the platform in several webinars, but have yet to use the tool myself! I think that will definitely try this platform in the upcoming school year.

His videos are so helpful! Thanks for sharing. Does anyone know if Flipgrid integrates with Sakai? A big concern for me is to keep things simple and streamlined for students. Sending them information through different channels seems to just ask for things to get overlooked or lost. Thanks!

It sound like this guy is in the right place at the right time! I love reading but honestly video tutorials can be sooo helpful and nice to watch when they are well produced! I've seen in his channel another tool I love and I haven't used for a while: Adobe Spark.

This easy-to-read introduction to SAMR (standing for "Substitution," "Augmentation," "Modification" and "Redefinition"), a model for helping integrate "technology tools into foreign-language classrooms," is blogged by a Chinese content and technology specialist who, I trust, has a lot of experience of incorporating media into Chinese learning activities. Besides clearly explaining how the SAMR model works for a L2 class via really useful tech tools such as Google Docs and Flipgrid, this blog also reveals a fact that our students "are not all 'digital natives,'" and encourages us, 21st-century educators, to "meet our students halfway to use tech for learning." I found the first two SAMR stages, namely, "Substitution" and "Augmentation," are very helpful for evaluating the interpretive mode implemented with appropriate media.
