    I noticed that I was only getting about 3 days' worth of tweets in Seesimic and then they didn't show any more - especially in the group hashtags for the "storytweeting" activity - so this interested me. You may also be interested in how to keep student tweets for classroom purposes.

      This is a script you can install on a google doc. I could spend time explaining it, but the demo is very clear.  It will save you a ton of time! We use Google Forms with flubaroo to do common formative assessments in our department as well as a homework assignment to get data for flexible groupings the next day.  If you have not used Google Forms before I would strongly recommend playing around with them, and then learn how to Flubaroo to save yourself some time!

      From what I understand, Google Docs exist within one's Google Drive in the same manner as your files and applications exist within your hard drive. I think Google is trying to make a distinction between a larger body and the parts within it. For example, I have an icon on my laptop's menu bar that takes me to my Google Drive. In my Google Drive are "My Drive" which contains my files and folders. I can also access my email, files that are shared with me which I have no ownership of and cannot move to "My Drive" folders, I can also access any Google Groups from my Google Drive, but they are not part of my Google Docs. That's my take on it.

      Thanks for that analogy. That helps a bit, but my head still swims with the amount of vocabulary bounced around in this tech world. I am trying to understand my OneDrive, SharePoint and things like that, with work having switched to Office 365. I am not liking it so far, because of the learning curve.

However, perhaps due to the synchronous nature of the interactions between tutors and students, cultural and racial stereotypes can interfere in many damaging ways. Does interpersonal communication in the language classroom, real or virtual, open up students and their interlocutors to situations for which we as teachers may not always be prepared?

  • Third, teachers can encourage collaborative learning in a number of ways with Google Slides. An assignment could be designed so that each student creates their own slides; once combined into one presentation, students can learn from each other. Or, small groups can collaborate on one slide presentation in real-time and then present their slides to the class, allowing for an engaging student presentation.

  • You can share any note in Evernote with other people—even if they aren't Evernote users! So it's actually great for this.
  • The second type of bookmark is the one I use for Evernote. It's bookmarking stuff that you want to reference later, but not the kind of stuff you visit every day. Does that make a little more sense?
  • Forgot to mention my third type of bookmark, which are full articles I send to Readability/Pocket/Instapepr for reading later. That's more for pleasure reading than reference, which is what I use Evernote for.

    I used to use Evernote a while ago for a staff writer/communications job I held in grad school. It helped a great deal with keeping my boss informed on my progress on news stories and for making suggestions. After reading this, I want to go back to it. I remember how organized it made me feel-- I'm sure I could use a lot more of that as a teacher! Thanks for sharing. Glad that Evernote is back on my radar-- with so much more to it than I remember!

      We often tell our students to avoid doing research online and to go to the library. However, we should be encouraging both. The issue with online is credibility of source. Students need to practice determining which are scholarly sources, worth of paper citation, and which are not.

      I have not tried this tool, but it sounds like a great combination of things--embedded videos, plus the ability to add quizzes. I am imagining being able to create something like a google-docs quiz or EdPuzzle, and embed within the context of a larger discussion of a topic. This might help to show how one activities fits into a broader unit.

  • trying to have a conversation with someone you have never met, over a low quality video connection, in a language you don’t speak very well, is quite challenging socially as well as linguistically.

      This is the most interesting point in the article. Even when speaking with another native English speaker on Skype or Google Hangouts, it can be hard to negotiate turn taking.

      "...no differences were found between video and FTF groups." The article shows that CMC performance is very similar to FTF--this suggests to me that recorded Skype conversations (or similar recorded online CMC work) could serve as a good way to practice and assess interpersonal communication skills.

  • Highlighting is one of my top go-to interpretive reading activities. Today I will review an app for Apple devices and Chrome. Let’s see how highlighting can go digital! I blogged about this “Highlight Away” activity before… It was Idea #71 in 2012! If you haven’t read it, take a minute to see where this idea started. Why I love highlighting… It gives a focus while reading It takes away the frustration of “not knowing every word” (adjust the task, not the text) It preps them to summarize It preps them to discuss the reading No comprehension questions needed (low teacher prep) It lets them figure out the meaning and learn new words in context It shows comprehension without translating Here are a few examples of highlighting activities we’ve done in lessons:
