The OpenLearn website gives free access to Open University course materials. This is the LearningSpace, where you'll find hundreds of free study units, each with a discussion forum. Study independently at your own pace or join a group and use the free learning tools to work with others. Links to tools and discussion forums in many content areas.

Sounds like a good place for many different kinds of content- and project-based learning. "Free Map Tools is an online resource that allows you to utilize maps in really cool and interesting ways. With this site you can find the distance between two points, by land and air. You are able to calculate the area of a region on a map. It allows you to determine how far you can travel while walking, riding a bike, or driving a car for a designated amount of travel time. It will even tell you where you would end up if you tunneled through the earth. Free Map Tools is a very cool website that has applications for social studies, science , and math teachers."

We all know lesson-planning is hard: "Here you will find free printable lesson plan templates, make sure to print off a few different choices and try each one for a week or two and see which one feels the best." So many choices, but they are going to be useful. Most are free. Or check out some of the big sites like PBS or Discovery Channel which have completed examples of lessons that you can capitalize on for your own.

Sheehan lists include the Federal Registry (free, and non-commercial) with animations, primary docs, maps, etc.; Graphic Organizers from Vermilion Parish; The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, with primary sources and online exhibits to explore history; Chonicling America from the Library of Congress, which contains a database of newspapers from 100 years ago. These sites would be great for authentic materials and content-based tasks for teens/adults.
