"Teachers who want to put web 2.0 technologies to work for them can find many different free options online. There are tools for creating online classrooms, social networks, student podcasts, web-based flashcards, elearning modules, and much more. Here are 10 free web 2.0 tools for teachers to try in the classroom this year." The first of these, Engrade, looks like it would be useful as an online assignment calendar, gradebook, IM, and progress report system.

A downloadable, free web accessibilty checklist: "Whether your course includes one web assignment or is a full-blown online journey, you're developing and managing online content for your students, who may have disabilities like "…blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity, and combinations of these. This is a tutorial on how to get started at Learni.st, which lets you aggregate neat things you find on the Web. You can add it to your Facebook timeline (or not), Tweet it, and use images and video, while adding a few paragraphs on how to use the "learning" you added. As with a blog, others can comment on your contributions. Like WallWisher or Pinterist, items are collected bulletin board style. This tool might be useful for professional development, and for students as a means to collect Web items for a project. If being an archivist is an important part of the new Web, this might be a helpful visual tool.

A blog describing, very briefly, a large number of tools. Mostly a list, but promises to do more later. Includes both Web and mobile tools, but sorted only roughly into categories.

Discovery Channel always has good videos and other tools for classroom use. This site has a huge collection of links for free tools.

"This study aims at investigating the efficiency of web quests in enhancing the 8th graders' descriptive writing. The 8th graders in the Lebanese public schools in general usually demonstrate poor writing skills. Consequently, they don't show motivation to write in English. The subjects of the study are one control group (n=22) and one experimental group (n=23) enrolled in grade eight in a public school in Beirut and whose ages range from thirteen to fifteen years old. The purpose of the study is to examine whether or not the web quest helps 8th graders achieve unity and coherence in writing descriptive paragraphs and to examine if the motivation towards writing is increased after using the web quest."

Wallwisher can be used to post messages to someone or several people, but it can also be used for educational purposes. The page works like a set of sticky notes. In this page, Nik Peachey has asked teachers to collect resources or links to good Web 2.0 tools. It will take some time to go through them all. The disadvantage is that there is no inherent organizational method. New messages pop up wherever, sometimes even over other messages. But it might be great fun to have a class of students or student-teachers try it out and collect resources for you. For example, you could have students look for good Grammar sites on the Web, then have them explore each other's and write "comments" in another Wall wisher post.

Not specifically oriented to ESL/EFL, but of interest to a difficult age group.

The focus here is on tools for collaboration. Many are new and interesting, such as virtual whiteboards, searchteam to do online searches together, browse websites together, create online projects collaboratively, create your own chatroom, etc.. Some of these will be gone quickly, but they all appear quite useful. About 30 in the list.

Debunks the hype surrounding the term "Web 2.0"

R. Byrne describes "web adventures in science that Rice University has produced. There are six adventures in the series including the CSI adventure. Each of the adventures is appropriate for middle school or high school use. In each adventure students take on the role of scientist to solve a crime, conduct experiments, and learn about scientific methods and processes." Neat way to engage students in science and science careers.

These tools may be of more use to teachers than students, and you will need to try them out individually, although there are short snips of information about each one.
