The list also includes very specific notations on WHY a teacher should be able to use these tools. Most useful.

Models two ways of coaching new teachers, online and real time. Sharing video of a previously taped class can is fast and can be very point-specific. The coach/mentor can type up and email comments, create an audio over, or Skype with the teacher while both watch the tape together. Real-time coaching involves a pre- and post-meeting with a live observer, who prompts a teacher through an earphone during the live session with students.

R. Byrne: "Keith Hughes, teacher and producer of the popular Hip Hughes History series of videos, recently released a good video for new teachers. Ten Solutions for Misbehavior offers practical advice for new teachers. "My addition to this list comes from the first principal that I worked under, "don't openly engage in power struggles with students."

"The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) provides a foundation for professional development for technology integration and a common vocabulary for talking about effective uses of technology in teaching and learning.... The newly revised TIM was launched in February 2011, and features 100 classroom video example lesson plans, revised and expanded descriptions of student activity, teacher activity, and instructional settings for each TIM cell, focus pages for each characteristic and level, new professional development resources, and indices for grade levels and digital tools. The site includes 25 videos lesson examples in each of four core subject areas - math, science, language arts, and social studies. These lessons were videotaped in classrooms across Florida. "The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells. " This is an amazing resource for teacher training. TIM is easily accessbile and recommends you look at grade levels beyond your own for ideas.

"Part of the strength of the TELL Project is its built-in ability for teachers to self-determine how well they currently meet the criteria defined in the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning Framework, relative to the growth they would like to make. To assist teachers in this aspect of reflective practice, TELL makes available self-assessment documents that allows an educator to pause and consider their current practice to identify possible areas of professional growth." The subtitle of this article is that "People don't learn from experiences, they learn from reflecting on their experiences." Has downloadable worksheet to help you find out if you have a safe and supportive learning environment.

"A real-time student response system that allows for formative assessment with quick feedback. It's free, easy to use, and works on any internet-enabled device." Teachers can create assignments using four question types: MCQ; Short Answer (text responses); Show Your Work (images, text, or draw); or enter. longer questions by uploading Word,G-Docs, or PDF files. "The Live Results feature makes it easy to provide helpful feedback in real-time. Teachers can view all responses as they are being created. I find this type of assessment particularly helpful when using Show Your Work questions, as I can watch a student work their way through the problem. Teachers can also use the Live Results feature to quickly provide students with feedback through comments or by grading the assignment with a simple slider. Teachers can export results as a .csv file." Sounds incredibly usefull for helping students in real time. T/h N LaFave

Teacher laureate of the Teaching Channel explains how the Common Core emerged from the state governors' meeting to create common ideas about what should be taught and learned in schools. Explains the types of assessment that are encouraged, e.g., formative assessment, and how the Common Core is not completely the same as a uniform curriculum. A good introduction to the Core whether you are a U.S. teacher, or a teacher in another country interested in developing your own national standards.

An excellent article on using mobile tech. The same discussion of how to use the technology has been taking place with computers for 2 decades, at least. Here is an example of teachers who "get it." "Teachers I talked to seemed uninterested, almost dismissive, of animations and gamelike apps. Instead, the tablets were intended to be used as video cameras, audio recorders, and multimedia notebooks of individual students' creations. The teachers cared most about how the devices could capture moments that told stories about their students' experiences in school. Instead of focusing on what was coming out of the iPad, they were focused on what was going into it."

"Various and sundry postings about educational design and instructional technology (EDIT) that involve introducing pre-service teachers to the uses of technology tools for teaching and learning." A good resource for teachers, Jacqui Cyrus's blog has lots of tools described, with some thoughts on using them. Also links to articles on educational technology

"During a lecture, students can use their phones, tablets or laptops to tell their teachers when they are confused and when they understood something. Teachers then see this data in real time and can adjust their lectures accordingly. The app does not actually tell the teacher who in the class isn't quite able to follow along, so students don't have to worry about voicing their concerns."

This has great videos on how to teach a wide variety of subjects, as well as how to manage students' behavior in class, set up collaborations, assessment, and esp. for US teachers, the common core standards. Very useful for teacher training, though not specifically oriented toward ESL/EFL.

Some of the good things about flipping the classroom, and how to do it. "A reversed teaching model that delivers instruction at home through interactive, teacher-created videos and moves "homework" to the classroom. Moving lectures outside of the classroom allows teachers to spend more 1:1 time with each student. Students have the opportunity to ask questions and work through problems with the guidance of their teachers and the support of their peers - creating a collaborative learning environment."

"The U.S. Library of Congress offers a wealth of fantastic online resources for teachers and students. A quick jump into the teachers resource page will lead you to things like these primary source analysis guides that I have used with students in the past. R. Byrne: "A featured resource on MoMA Learning is this video containing five tips for teaching with works of art. The video not only lists the tips, it contains examples of using these tips to teach art history and art appreciation lessons to students." Most of the great art museums and natural history museums of the world have websites with instructional materials of very high quality. It's worth some time to explore what they offer and figure out how to adapt their resources for your classes. One of the other excellent resources on MoMA Learning is this glossary of art terms. In many cases the definitions in the glossary contain links to multiple examples of each term. This blog has great links to citizenship-related exercises and teacher resources, such as the US Constitution in simple English. Should be an important resource for US teachers of adult ed, as well as teachers of American culture overseas.
