"Editing an image is very popular these days due to the innovation of graphic software programs that will allow us to create computer arts from scratch. However, we could also enhance, add some cool effects and customize the look of our images easily without having the need of these soft wares through the online photo editors. An online photo editor tool allows us to edit and manipulate a photo in the Web Browser. This is more advantageous compared to the softwares for editing an image as this could not consume much of the memory of your desktop and the processing is done faster by the server. Photos can stimulate emotions, memories, and discussion. I've used photos, either cut from magazines or the local newspaper, or taken by students themselves, to teach reading and writing both overseas and with middle school students in the US. This article suggests almost a dozen online applications to make cartoons out of photos. Find a useful tool for your students to use in digital storytelling.

A very handy app for adding titles/captions directly on a photo, either plain text or in color, rotated, fancy font, etc. Thi is iPhone and iPad, but check out what might be available for other smart mobile devices. Use for vocabulary self-quizzes shared on social media or among classmates, and for project-based learning.

See related article on using photos to read and write. Photos can be used to inspire writing, but also teach/practice syntax. For example, ask not just what details are seen in the picture (e.g., descriptive writing, universal present tense), but predict what will happen in the future (future aspect, conditionals).

This might be a fun way to get students to remember what they did the day before: snap some photos during the course of the day, then run them as a slideshow as the kids are coming into class the next day. iPad is cool.

If you are hooked on mobile and photos, this might be fun for you. Though smart phones can email pictures easily, Instagram is more of a social tool, lets you follow others, and lets you apply special effects to your pictures. Students will probably find it fun. This is a good how-to for both beginner and advanced, though it has no pedagogical advice.

Another photo editing tool with a focus on cutesy effects, e.g., add a speech bubble or text, frames, change to an oil painting, etc.

This might be a good activity for your students. They need to create a long, narrow photo for the top and the bottom of the browser, and then upload it to the site. All the step-by-step directions and specifications are at the site (a good reading activity), and they can try it out before uploading. After the photo is accepted, they can share their personal favorites and/or make their theme public for others to use. You will need to be able to download an add-on to Firefox before starting the process, so this may require the OK from your school administration or tech support. However, the download itself takes only a few seconds.

You can have students create their own groups to share photos and videos.

Use Flickr or Picasa to place photos in a Yahoo or Google map.

There are several dozen things Big Huge Labs let you do with photos, either on the Internet, or uploaded (if you register), or linked from Flickr or FaceBook: make gifts, art posters, a movie poster, magazine cover, jigsaw, wallpaper, etc. Would be fun for student projects.

This would be a great project base for students. They take photos, upload them and then record a voice description. Has connect to Facebook option also.
