"The participants were given an intelligence test in 1947 at the age of 11 and were retested in their early 70s, between 2008 and 2010. Of those, 195 learned the second language before the age of 18, while 65 learned the language after this age. Researchers found that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities in later life, compared to what would be predicted from their performance in the tests at age 11. "Of course, since we all live in the real world, it's unlikely that we will be successful in getting all our students participating -- particularly in a cognitive way -- all the time. However, there are a number of actions we can take to increase the odds of as many as our students being active learners and co-creators of what is happening in the classroom.... R. Stannard has some instruction about how to use the ESL magazine, Breaking News English, which has games to play online, as well as an audio reading of the content, in various accents. A well-thought out set of activities, not just drill-and-grill.

A nice demonstration of how to conduct discussions in small group and pairs. Demonstrates active listening by the teachers as students report back then go to the board to offer the results of their discussions. Structured discussions and student ownership of the reasoning process are good even for very young learners.

Online resources are a great way to individualize/personalize reading habits: "Teachers trying to motivate or teach students to read can find lots of reading resources online.
