"Google's Drawing program is the perfect platform to practice orthography- the skill of writing characters and symbols to create words- in language classrooms with non-Roman alphabets, such as Arabic or Chinese. Students of these languages need lots of practice handwriting the new alphabet or pictographic symbols, which is difficult to do in a digital environment. In traditional word processing programs, typing pictographic languages, such as Chinese, requires the student to change the keyboard language and then phonetically type the syllables. Characters will pop out fully formed, which is efficient and useful, but bypasses the important orthographic practice! Google Drawing presents teachers with an opportunity to digital collect and monitor their students' orthography without having to scan in and email worksheets. The Scribble Tool in Google Drawing allows the user to create free form lines and by extension hand-drawn language characters. Couple Google Drawing with a pen mouse and Chinese language students are fully prepared to complete short answer or extended writing assignments online." You could also use Google Drawing for students from pictographic language to practice handwirting English.

This is a magic place where students can add to a drawing and write about it. One additional activity might be to explore some of the cultural assumptions expressed in the drawings. You may not be aware, but Google Docs also has a presentation program feature. So if you can't afford Office, but have Internet access, this is a great tool. (Also check out the drawing program.)

The activities include hyperlinking documents, a gallery walk with QR codes, sharing documents and pictures related to readings, connecting with other classes around the world, etc. Has ideas for kindergartners as well as teens and adults. Drawing and maps projects as well.

These tools might also be of great use for other kinds of content-based projects and learning activities. For middle and upper grades as well as adults: Scribble Maps (an easier version of Google Earth/Maps), which includes pencil tools for drawing on the map; Presentations within Google Classroom, used by the students; Newspaper Generator to summarize main ideas; Timeline Maker, with a link to a planner activity and reference to another on ReadWriteThink; and Fakebook, a Facebook-like application for historical figures on ClassTools.net. Very useful blog with many other tools and activities. Social studies oriented.

This is an online collaboration tool that let's you hangout with up to 10 people, work on a document or drawing together using Google docs. It's Hangout amplified.

Great ideas for tools and their uses, categorized by media aspects, e.g., blogging and writing, photos, audio, PLNs, presentations, research databases, search, etc., with an intro to get you started. The list then continues with other, less frequently used tools, such as digital portfolios, Google drawings, notetaking tools, apps, etc.

R. Byrne: "Scribble Maps provides a variety of base layer maps on which you can draw freehand, add placemarks, add image overlays, and type across the map. Compared to creating a custom map on Google Maps, Scribble Maps is much easier for students to learn how to use.
