Using QR Codes in your classroom - 1 views

  •
I can actually see how we might do this with students' mobile devices. Guilt relief here too :)
  •
Personally I have had no luck with QR codes, my understanding it that they do not work with iPhone 3G. You need 3GS or later. That being said I think there is some potential here, especially in terms of getting students quickly to sites when you are using some kind of presentation. I think it could also be a tool to teach to kids and get them to use in projects and assignments especially if we start veering away from the traditional type of assignments.
  •
are you serious? Steve Jobs has also banned QR codes?? i haven't used QR codes in my class, but i do like how i can scan one and avoid typing in a url. i mostly find myself scanning QR codes for apps to download. on a related note, google has discontinued QR codes in for google Places... a thing i saw in the states (noticed it in Portland, OR) where businesses would have a sticker in their window. it seemed a bit like yelp.

I think the approach that we need to consider is how to help students manage their lives (at least their academic ones) with technology. We need to figure out what the parameters are, and then find ways to teach this. A noble and challenging idea since like all of us students are drawn to allure of the digital world. As stated in the article: "If you break off the Internet, so what? They've got 3G on their phones and iPads,'' he said. "Instead, come up with a rule and express it."
  •
And to help students manage online and real life interactions, teachers need to get that experience first-hand, so they know what it's like. (Yet, governing bodies like the Ontario College of Teachers recently announced teachers should not use any social media.)
  •
I think that as a group we need to address the issue of how to approach managing wireless technology in the class. Just based on the chatter following the student's presentation and what has surfaced in our own group. If we don't examine this issue then it will end up undermining most of what we try and accomplish.
  •
I totally agree. I'm not sure if you saw on twitter, but the Coquitlam school district is putting in fibre-optics and will be creating a digital code of conduct so that students can bring/use devices in class.

I haven't listened to the whole interview yet but this seems intriguing the downside is that it is targeted to at risk students so it is the opposite end of the spectrum for many of us. In addition I have relieved some of my guilt since now at least I have posted something.

Cognitive control in media multitaskers - 0 views

  • These data demonstrate that HMMs are not only less capable of filtering out irrelevant stimuli from their environment, but also are less capable of filtering out irrelevant representations in memory.
  • Collectively, the data suggest that HMMs are less likely to filter irrelevant representations arising from either external or internal sources.
  • Thus, we can rule out differences in working memory capacity between HMMs and LMMs as the cause of differences in cognitive control.
  •
Stanford U journal article on multi-tasking; sample size: 262 university students Cause or effect is unknown...heavy media multi-taskers were unable to disregard irrelevant external info when accuracy mattered; and were also unable to disregard irrelevant info stored in memory; are these differences in ability to multi-task are due to behaviour (in which case these types of people will have a harder and harder time adapting to changes in how we interact with info and work), or if a new kind of cognition is developing (in which case we have to adapt to their brains)
