Cognitive control in media multitaskers - 0 views

  • These data demonstrate that HMMs are not only less capable of filtering out irrelevant stimuli from their environment, but also are less capable of filtering out irrelevant representations in memory.
  • Collectively, the data suggest that HMMs are less likely to filter irrelevant representations arising from either external or internal sources.
  • Thus, we can rule out differences in working memory capacity between HMMs and LMMs as the cause of differences in cognitive control.

Stanford U journal article on multi-tasking; sample size: 262 university students Cause or effect is unknown...heavy media multi-taskers were unable to disregard irrelevant external info when accuracy mattered; and were also unable to disregard irrelevant info stored in memory; are these differences in ability to multi-task are due to behaviour (in which case these types of people will have a harder and harder time adapting to changes in how we interact with info and work), or if a new kind of cognition is developing (in which case we have to adapt to their brains)
