This activity can be modified for ELL students by drawing pictures, rather than writing words, in each category. For older age levels, this activity could include more difficult or complex categories.

    Children classify and sort objects found outdoors into a chart/graph on the sidewalk. This chart or graph can be written with sidewalk chalk. The categories can be predetermined by the teacher, or the students can come up with the categories.

"Classify living organisms according to variations in specific physical features (e.g., body coverings, appendages) and describe how those features may provide an advantage for survival in different environments." This activity can be modified for ELL students by having them draw pictures of the bugs they find, rather than writing words or numbers. This can also be adjusted for older groups by having them classify animals they see, which could include mammals, insects, fish, etc. They could also describe many other characteristics, such as the types of food these animals or insects eat.

    Students observe different bugs found in nature, and record their characteristics (number of legs, the presence of wings, etc.). The students can then draw their own conclusions about the types of bugs found.

      ELL - English Language Learners could work with a partner to research the site, but the sifting and categorizing process is hands on, and doesn't require strong language skills.  By using pictorial examples for instructions, ELL students can be successful in this effort.

    This site doesn't provide specific activities; however, I would design earth science activities to assist kids in researching this park, and the surround area.  We would discuss how and why the area has these deposits, the history of the area, and how to go about finding diamonds and other cool rocks.   Extension activity:  Order bags of dirt from Crater of Diamonds park and have the kids sift through to find and identify various rocks and minerals.   Standards: 3.2.1:  Examine the physical properties of rock samples and sort them into categories based on size using simple tools such as sieves. 3.2.2:  Observe the detailed characteristics of rocks and minerals.  Identify rocks as being composed of different combinations of minerals. 3.2.3:  Classify and identify minerals by their physical properties of hardness, color, luster, and streak.

      This would be something to add to math stations...you could add to the lesson for ELL students by including an activity on listing English vocab words (with pictures) that they would sort to add to each shape.

      Sticky Note: Grades 2-5 all have portions of Life Sciences devoted to ecosystems and this project could be easily manipulated to focus on different aspects of an ecosystem. I would give specific guidelines in some cases, especially for younger grades, but it would be great to allow older students to have time to brainstorm the kind of ecosystem they wanted to complete and allow them to go through the research process to create a good replica of that ecosystem.

    5.3.1 Observe and classify common Indiana organisms as producers, consumers, decomposers, predator and prey based on their relationships and interactions with other organisms in their ecosystem. I would use parts A and C as descriptions of the project and disregard part B. Sticky Note: Grades 2-5 all have portions of Life Sciences devoted to ecosystems and this project could be easily manipulated to focus on different aspects of an ecosystem.     Children use this Twister game as a way to learn their shapes. The children design the game board by drawing several different shapes. A spinner is made, and directions are given to the children playing. Each child puts their hand or foot on the space designated to them by the directions.

      This activity can be used as a language development activity for ELL students. You can ask them to describe the shapes and colors of the nuts and bolts. ELL students can use their visual strengths to excel in sorting activities such as this one.

      4.G.2 "Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles." This activity can be modified for ELL students, gifted students, etc. by using fewer shapes, as well as shapes that are easier to identify. In the other sense, it can be modified to include more shapes that are more difficult to identify. This activity could also be used in other subject areas, such as science. It could be used to identify different classifications of plants and animals. It could also be used in foreign language. The students could read a vocabulary word in the foreign language, and then have to say the correct vocabulary work in English.

    Children make a game board displaying different shapes they should know (polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, etc.). Each child roles the die and moves that number of spaces. If that player can correctly identify the shape in their space, they roll again. The first one to the end and back wins!
