Cape Coral Elks Lodge reopen after hiatus over holidays | The News-Press | news-press.com - 1 views

Odd.. I wonder if the news of this questionable decision on elks.org caused someone to rethink the closing. If one checks quidestar for the lodge's financials one would see that they were in above average shape.

Losing $73,000 is a lot so that is obviously a concern. Still, sometimes these 'special representatives' are not very people friendly. I've know a few who seem to get these high autocratic positions in the Elks and they abuse their power. Let's hope that is not the case either.

Interesting article and yes.. the fear of DUI's have contributed significantly to the reduction of participation among members. No question about that. Here in NC, it is not uncommon for Law Enforcement spokespersons to warn motorists not to have even ONE drink. Between click it and ticket and don't drink and drive campaigns these questionable tactics average one campaign every 6 weeks or so. So it is no wonder most folks just stay the heck home.

BEN BROMLEY / NEWS REPUBLIC Dorothy Alt was sworn in Saturday as exalted ruler of the Baraboo Elks Lodge, the first female to earn the honor. Here, she holds an old sign banning ladies from "lodge nights." The club began accepting female members in 1996. By Ben Bromley / News Republic You might think a title like "exalted ruler" would come with a golden scepter or a foppish hat, but Dorothy Alt has neither. What she has instead is a historic title: She's the first woman to lead the Baraboo Elks Lodge.

PETERSBURG-AK (2009-09-16) Over five thousand US service men and women have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department. Nearly 35 thousand more have been wounded in the two wars. Earlier this month, six wounded soldiers from Alaska's Fort Richardson spent a weekend in Petersburg for some rest and relaxation. Their trip was part of the Alaska State Elks Association's Wounded Veterans Project, which is aimed at helping injured vets and raising awareness about their needs. The program compliments the Army's own wounded warrior battalions that were set up to aid injured soldiers upon their return home.

The Watertown Elks are distributing free dictionary reference books to all of the public school third-grade classes in Watertown, Jefferson, Johnson Creek and Lake Mills. The local Dictionary Project is being funded through a donation from the Watertown Elks Lodge. The idea for The Dictionary Project began in 1992 when Annie Plummer of Savannah, Ga., gave 50 dictionaries to children who attended a school close to her home. Each year she continued to give this gift, raising money to help give more and more books so that in her lifetime she raised enough money to buy 17,000 dictionaries for children in Savannah.
