SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Apparently tradition runs deep among the Elks, deep enough for the Springfield Lodge of Elks 46th annual fishing derby Saturday at Forest Park. Springfield area boys and girls up to the age of 12 participated in the fishing derby at Barney Pond in Forest Park.

"The Stavely Elks have presented the Nanton Children Society with a cheque for $2,500 for new playground equipment. The new playground system will help replace the system located at Centennial Park. Other playground systems will be developed at Nanton Lion's Park and in Westview. "

The Sayre Elks Lodge 1148 hosted the event, in which members of the Valley Color Guard presented many of the former designs of the American flag as a history of the flag's many changes over the years was read by Elks Trustee Al Engelbert.

Six truckloads of sand was dumped in the Elks Lodge parking lot Friday afternoon. The sand was being trucked in by Morgan Sand and Gravel and spread around on the parking lot to create two courts in prepration for today's Dog Days of Summer Sand Volleyball Tournament at the Elks Lodge.

"Tiffin Elks Lodge 94 is celebrating 127 years in Tiffin. Exalted Ruler Joe Steinmetz, who joined the lodge seven years ago, is helping plan the event with other members. Why celebrate 127 years? "We want to commemorate 127 years of benevolence in Tiffin and celebrate another 100 years of active involvement in our community," Steinmetz said. Friday, dinner and live entertainment will take place for members and guests. Events Saturday are open to the public at 106 E. Perry St. Indoor and outdoor activities are to continue all day Saturday, with proceeds to benefit Disabled American Veterans. At 8 a.m., registration opens for a 5K run or 1K walk. An opening ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. and the race steps off at 10 a.m., following a route along Riverside Drive and downtown Tiffin. Registration for the 5K and 1K can be done up to the day of the race at $15 per person. The age groups are: 12 and under; 13-19; 20-34; 35-50; and over 50. Forms can be obtained at the Elks, Clover Club, Madison Street Tavern, Varsity Barber Shop, Champs Barber Shop, Pit Stop, Reino's and Ace Hardware. Checks should be made payable to Tiffin Elks Lodge 94. A grill and beverage bar opens at noon to serve all day. A mini-golf challenge and cornhole tournament are to begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot. The cost is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament. Next, 8-11 p.m. is the "rooty music" of Dragon Wagon, with a mix of bluegrass, rock and folk. Steinmetz said the Elks National Foundation issues grants to qualifying lodges to meet community needs. Steinmetz said the Elks have partnered with organizations such as Winterfest and Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival and are looking for grant opportunities for both events this year. But that was the case on a recent day, when Vacaville police canines completed a run of their new local training facility at Centennial Park, complete with obstacles crafted by members of the Vacaville Elks Lodge No. 2638.

HUDSON - Hudson Lodge of Elks has awarded a total of $1 million in scholarships in the past eight years, it was announced at the eighth annual Hudson Elks Awards banquet Wednesday, May 20 at Elks Hall, Park Street, Hudson. The Elks presented $60,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from area high schools that evening.

The Simi Valley Elks and the Emblem Club joined together and sponsored Parks & Recreation Alternative Bowlers. This event is held yearly. This year there were 94 bowlers. The bowlers all had a wonderful time and everyone was a winner.

WOONSOCKET - The city and Woonsocket Lodge of Elks will host their annual children's fishing derby on Saturday, April 11, the first day of fishing season. The event takes place at Cass Park pond, where the state Department of Environmental Management has stocked trout.

COOS BAY, ORE - As area Christians celebrated Easter over the weekend, communities up and down the South Coast came together to take part in the Easter Egg Hunts that have become tradition. One of the host sites was at Mingus Park in Coos Bay.

Davis, 25, has lived in Lincoln Park for years. He walks past the building - a massive gray dome encircled by a hefty colonnade - almost every day. But while the Elks National Memorial and Headquarters, located at the intersection of Diversey Avenue and Sheridan Road, is open to the public seven days a week during the summer, Davis shrugged it off. "I just don't think I really know that much about the Elks," he said. "They're up there with Rotary and those other groups. You know, stuff your grandpa was in. But I don't really even know what the hell they do."

After six years of fulltime travel, we have a heck of a time remembering details of the campgrounds and RV parks we have called "home". Did our Verizon phones work there? Which site were we in? What did we pay, and was it worth it?

Kevin Blaine, Red Bank Elks Lodge #233 Youth Activities Chairman, presents a check for $1000 to Jill Mc Donald, Employment Readiness Program Manager, of Fort Monmouth. Advertisement The donation will benefit over 50 children of Fort Monmouth's 2009 Summer Youth Volunteer Program. This program is an employment readiness program held for teenagers who are immediate family members of the military and of Ft Monmouth. The students will be gaining "World of Work" experience during the summer program through volunteer services in and around the base community.
