A Cleburne organization is helping those in crisis after winning a $10,000 national grant. The Cleburne Elks Lodge received the grant last year after Sharen Rotenberry, chairman of the Elks National Foundation for the Cleburne Lodge, applied for the Elks National Foundation impact grant, meant to help local charitable organizations.

Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 has presented scholarships to eight Northwest students. Five students earned Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Contest scholarships. Justin Haley, who attends Ironwood Ridge High School, received a $4,000 scholarship and is competing as a national finalist. Pusch Ridge Christian Academy students Victoria Johnston, Jordan Thompson and Morgan Van Stelle each received $1,000 awards for use at the college of their choice, as did Russell Smith from Canyon del Oro High School. All students were selected based upon their academic achievements and leadership skills as well as their participation in community affairs, a release said.

MARTINS FERRY - Perhaps it's the fact that James L. Nichelson is the oldest of 10 children. Or maybe it is his education, military or law experience that make him what he is today. Whatever the cause, this Martins Ferry resident's unique abilities will soon be realized by a national audience. On July 9 in Portland, Ore., Nichelson, 61, will be installed as the Grand Exalted Ruler - national president - for the Protective Order of the Elks. He is the first Ohio resident to be named to the post in 38 years.

Jordyn Schara makes grown men cry. The 14-year-old feels guilty, because every time veterans read her national prize-winning essay on freedom, they break down in tears. Merle Alt, chairman of the Baraboo Elks Club's essay program, can hardly discuss Schara's piece without choking up. And he's not alone. The Dover Elks Lodge will be hosting a series of special events to honor the youth of our community. The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) is a national organization committed to recognizing the accomplishments of our young people. I'm sure chicago is an endless money pit. Need to have a program to move homeless vets out of that corrupt hell hole of a town. They could have done it if they haven't had given away the Elks home for a song. there was 200 acres and it is just so very hard to believe that this crown jewel of elkdom couldn't have been utilized for veterans.

A mini-golf challenge and cornhole tournament are to begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot. The cost is $20 per team for the cornhole tournament.
