The MV Elks Lodge recently organized a drug outreach at the Laguna Hills Mall. Drug Awareness Chairman Gloria R. LeCouvre set up a Community Booth to distribute Drug Awareness Brochures, Pamphlets, Coloring books, and American flags to the parents and children shopping for back-to-school items. Volunteers Nettie Bennington and Gerry Schiphorst were on hand to help during the 11 am to 6 pm project.

The local Elks lodges have always tried to educate young people about the repercussions of using drugs and alcohol. However, the simple message of "Don't do drugs" didn't seem to be getting through, said Sharon Welch, north district chairman of the Colorado Elks Drug Awareness Program. "Before, we weren't reaching the audience," she said. "We needed to take a different path and be more modern." That's when coordinators contacted Milton Creagh.

"Rutherford Elks Lodge, located at 48 Ames Ave. in Rutherford, is hosting a live band karaoke night on Friday, Jan. 29. Tickets are $25 and will feature OpenMicProject performing live music for your singing and dancing fun. Guests are welcome to bring snacks and food for their tables. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Committee of the Lodge,"
