In recent months it's become apparent that a lot of people find themselves overwhelmed by too much information. Subscribe to too many RSS feeds and follow too many people of Twitter and FriendFeed and suddenly you find yourself struggling to keep up with what is mostly irrelevant nonsense. Louis Gray wrote a commonsense post on his blog this weekend: "You Control Your Noise Velocity". Louis' straightforward point is that rather than complain about too much noise, you should just make sure you only subscribe to as much as you feel comfortable with.

With an ever-growing number of applications out there enabling you to get near-instant access to news stories, friends' status updates, and social networking activity, many people are feeling panicked. A not too uncommon refrain I've seen is that there is too much "noise", and this fear of noise is what is holding back the growth of some services, or stopping people, who may have already chosen one they liked, from signing up to more news sources and social networks.

We really can't deny the fact that businesses are testing out Twitter as part of their steps into the social media landscape. You can say it's a stupid application, that no business gets done there, but there are too many of us (including me) that can disagree and point out business value. I'm not going to address the naysayers much with this. Instead, I'm going to offer 50 thoughts for people looking to use Twitter for business.

It always amazes me how many bloggers insert unoptimized images in their posts. As a result thereof, their home page, which often contains a couple of posts, sometimes in full length, loads slow or not at all. I get many questions about the latter. Almost always the load time of a home page can be improved right away by optimizing the images. That requires some extra work though. And extra time. But at least your visitors don't click away because your page takes way too long to load. So, if you want to use an image in your posts, optimize it first.

While I was preparing my presentation for "Starting the Conversation," a social media workshop hosted by SocialMediaClub, I wound up drafting version one of the manifesto for helping marketers adapt to the rapidly evolving realm of social media. In the past, I've spoken at PR, tech, and communications events about Social Media and how companies can engage in the conversations taking place with or without them. As much as I wanted to look into the future, I was rooted in the present as a means to connect it to the past. There are just too many new things to introduce to people and even more reasons why they should care.

The arguments that blogs are dead usually center around several key points. 1. The growth of high-traffic, high-profile, multi-author blogs destroys any hope for the average individual blogger to be discovered and gain any meaningful audience. 2. Newer forms of social media, like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr make the need for personal blogs obsolete. 3. The never-ending comment spam, coupled with comments from obnoxious readers, simply require too much energy and time. These observations are completely accurate based on my experience with blogs and the Internet.
