Prosody on the web - 0 views

  • The functions of prosody are many and fascinating. Where speech-sounds such as vowels and consonants function mainly to provide an indication of the identity of words and the regional variety of the speaker, prosody can indicate syntax, turn-taking in conversational interactions, types of utterance such as questions and statements, and people's attitudes and feelings. They can also indicate word-identity (although only occasionally, in English). We will treat a few well-defined prosodic functions such as chunking and focus. The forms (or elements) of prosody are derived from the acoustic characteristics of speech. They include the pitch or frequency, the length or duration, and the loudness or intensity. All these forms are present in varying quantities in every spoken utterance. The varying quantities help determine the function to which listeners orient themselves in interpreting the utterance. The screens in the tutorials on prosodic forms are designed to attune your ear to these varying degrees of presence.

Using Technology to Support Diverse Learners - 0 views

  •
The purpose of this Web site is to focus on how technology already in the classroom or school can support good instruction and research-based strategies that work. Our focus in this site is on Differentiated Instruction - which is a teaching theory based on the idea that instructional approaches should give students multiple options for taking in information, making sense of ideas, expressing what they learn, and accommodating differences while teaching to students strengths and knowledge (Tomlinson 2001).

  •
I decided to develop this list to guide other educators and caregivers towards the apps that I have found to be most beneficial, not only at home with my typically developing 7 year old, but also at work with the elementary students on my speech-language caseload. The ranking is in no particular order of preference and some of these were released this year, while others are a couple years old. Please use the comment section below to add any fabulous apps that I missed in my favorite list!

LinguiSystems-Early Social Behaviors Rating Scale.pdf (application/pdf Object) - 0 views

  •
The earliest social indicators are easy to miss because they are reduced or absent in children who are later diagnosed with autism. Primarily for parents/caregivers. Although there is some variability in typical development, these social behaviors should develop by 9 to 12 months of age. Indicate how often the child displays each behavior. If the child obtains a rating of Never or Seldom on any item, consider it a red flag and seek further evaluation.

About TAP - 1 views

  •
"The Targets and Activities Project (TAP) website has been set up to allow Speech and Language Therapists, Language and Communication Teachers and others to share ideas with those working with children with communication difficulties in schools and other locations. On this site you will find activities sheets for working with children at a variety of different levels and across a variety of curriculum and skill areas. The site uses the P-scales and the lower levels from the National Curriculum as a means for organising these documents in a way which should make them easy to find. These documents use a simple standardised format to make them easy and quick to read. TAP sheets are especially designed to be used by education staff - such as learning support assistants - who have had guidance from the appropriate specialist."
