Back in October, the geeks were crapping their collective shorts in anger at some ill-advised changes coming out of Mountain View. If you'll recall, Google tweaked Reader and rolled out some crappy apps in what was called the week Google messed up. "We're leaving Google!" the geeks proclaimed.

"M.I.T. led the way to an era of online learning 10 years ago by posting course materials from almost all its classes. Its free OpenCourseWare now includes nearly 2,100 courses and has been used by more than 100 million people. But the new "M.I.T.x" interactive online learning platform will go further, giving students access to online laboratories, self-assessments and student-to-student discussions."

How can Twitter, which limits users to 140 characters per tweet, have any relevance to universities and academia, where journal articles are between 3,000-8,000 words long? Can anything of academic value ever be said in just 140 characters?

The video is a look at some upcoming technology and the potential impact on libraries. Very interesting, but no mention of the sustainability of these things / these directions. Long, but worth watching.

ForensicNursing.org is an online resource committed to compiling the most relevant information to the practice of forensic nursing and related fields. Discussion topics range from general nursing theory to, most recently, forensic nursing and primary sexual violence prevention.

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) announces the availability of a draft update of SERU: A Shared Electronic Resource Understanding for public comment (NISO RP-7-201X) through February 19, 2012. SERU offers publishers and libraries the opportunity to save both the time and the costs associated with a negotiated and signed license agreement for e-resources by both content provider and customer agreeing to operate within a framework of shared understanding and good faith. The SERU framework provides a set of common understandings for parties to reference as an alternative to a formal license when conducting business.

In this article I would like to make the case that a change in the delivery of sci- entific content and in the business models for delivering scholarly communication was inevitable from the moment journals moved online, even if much of this change is yet to come. By applying a thesis put forth by Chris Anderson in his 2009 book Free,1 I will argue that given that scholarly journals are now digital products, they are subject to very dif- ferent economic principles and social forces than their print ancestors.
