The Recess Queen - Alexis O'Neill - 0 views

  •
The Recess Queen is a book about a bully on the playground at recess. Her name is Mean Jean and she has total control of the playground. Nobody can do anything before she does; if they do, she gets mad and lets everyone know it. Then, one day a new girl comes to school and changes everything. Katie Sue, the new girl, lets every kid at school know that she does not care what Mean Jean does. She will play whenever she wants and with whatever she wants. The Recess Queen is a great book that lets kids know how to make friends; it seems to say that you should not let people intimidate you. Also, the illustrations in this book are very colorful. A lot of kids are bullied and pushed around by the "Mean Jean's" of the world; after reading The Recess Queen, hopefully many kids can become "Katie Sue's."

Poems to Dream Together: Poemas Para Sonar Juntos by Francisco Alarcon - 0 views

  •
Poems to Dream Together by Francisco Alarcon is a great poetry book. This book is a collection of poems. The poems are in Spanish and English. The poems have subjects like: childhood, teacher experiences, and ones about the future. They are very short and have lots of meaning that will effect the children positively. This book has a wide range of topics and many can read it due to the number of languages in it. This is a great poetry book for children ages seven to nine. A great picture book to visualize the meaning of the poems. This book can be found in Penn State libraries.

Almost Late for School - Carol Diggory Shields - 0 views

  •
Almost Late to School is a collection of poems about school. The book starts off with a poem about the first day of school. Then, the topics range from getting along with classmates to detention to what happens after school. These poems will probably make any student laugh! The illustrations in this book are very cute and colorful. Almost Late to School would be a fantastic book to read in a classroom after a very long and stressful day. What I really like about this book is that it does a great job at introducing poetry to children in a very humorous way that they can understand. When you want to look at this book, let me know.

Raccoon Tune by Nancy Shaw - 0 views

  •
"Raccoon Tune" is an amazing book full of fun illustrations and an outlook on the night life from a raccoon's point of view. The use of poetry in this story makes the text fun and enjoyable for readers of almost any age. This book holds several strengths. First, it's images support the text that is being presented page by page. Second, it uniquely uses poetry as it's main format of writing and portraying the given story. Finally, the illustrations and story line are fun and interesting. It is definitely a book that can keep the attention of any child. "Raccoon Tune" is a great book to use as an example of the use of poetry as a type of writing. It also promotes creativity and the use of unique ideas within a peice of writing.

Pat-A-Cake is a wonderful piece of poetry that everyone can come to love. The book is put together very well and has excellent illustrations in and throughout the book. The book would be a great piece to add to anyone's collection of poetry books for the elementary children. This book can be found at your local Altoona Library.

A Fly Went By by Mike McClintock - 0 views

  •
This book is about a little boy who is relaxing by the lake and a fly goes by. The little boy grows curious as to why the fly flew past so fast. He catches up to the fly and finds out he is running from a frog. This begins a story where various animals and a man are running from the thing that comes after them. The little boy finally figures out that the animals aren't chasing after each other and that one noise started it all. The repetitive rhyming nature of this book will hook children instantly. The book does an amazing job in combining the elements of a story and poetry. This would be a great book to use in a poetry unit to show that poems aren't always just a few lines long.

Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss - 0 views

  •
    Oh! The Places You'll Go is about a boy starting off on his journey to Great Places. He's "off and away!" He's got brains and feet, and can go in any direction he chooses. He's fresh and excited about his latest adventure, and he knows nothing will stop him. This stories strength is that it tells a story by using poetry, but makes it very fun and interesting for children. From a teacher's point of view, I think it would be an outstanding novel to incorporate with a poetry lesson to show children that poems can be stories, too. I do have this book, so if you would like to check it out, let me know. Enjoy (;

Mama is a miner - 0 views

  •
I could not find a good website for this book. This book is very interesting. The pictures are paintings and they are great. Some pages do not have words. Some pages have two sets of words, one set telling the story, and the other set rhyming, it is interesting. It details her work as a miner. I notice a father in the pictures but he is never mentioned. It is a great example of a strong female.

Sometimes I'm Bombaloo by Rachel Vail - 0 views

  •
"Sometimes I'm Bombaloo" is a great story about a girl who loses her temper. The author uses a funny word as a metaphor for angry. This book shows what Katie is feeling when she is angry and what helps to calm her down so she is herself again. This would be a very helpful book for children who seem to have some trouble dealing with their anger.

America, My New Home : Wordsong Poetry by Monica Gunning - 0 views

  •
"America, My New Home" tells a young girl's journey to America through poetry. She compares her new home to her old one in Jamaica in twenty-three different poems. This book shows that you don't have to tell a story the old-fashioned way. You can do it using poetry as well. A great way to get children to write poetry is through a story about themselves like the girl did in the book.

Shel's Books - 0 views

  •
This book is my personal favorite poetry book.  I remember reading this when I was young and all the kids in my class loved it too. Shel Silverstein, the author of many books of prose and poetry, really did a wonderful job with this one. Where the Sidewalk Ends has tons of poems and great illustrations to go along with each one.  Every poem is packed with humor and imagination.  One weekness for might be that it doesn't tell one continuous story.  This book would make an excellent source for a coffee house or readers theater.
