Love this site, especially the pictures. I like to show the kids the pictures to start discussions- name the animal, where does it live, do we have these here in WV? endangered? etc. Good for discussion about our impact on animals around the world.

The National Parks: America's Best Idea - 0 views

  •
Produced by Ken Burns, I watched all six episodes. They are inspiring, and although the episodes are not in their entirety, there are dozens of short clips with lessons written for each. When our students get politically aware, I'd like them to have an understanding of what a treasure national parks are; and the need to protect them.

Seems a limited number of kits, and you must register your site first. I managed to get a kit in 2011. The kits themselves are fairly inexpensive through WWMC's site.

CAIT Climate Data Explorer - 4 views

  •
CAIT is one of the most trusted sources of climate data available. It is a free and open source for comprehensive and comparable climate and emissions data. CAIT is made up of a suite of tools that allow users to utilize the data to understand considerations of equity in climate negotiations, see transparency and available information in country climate action comitments, interact with historical emissions data, and dive into the methodologies behind future emissions projections. CAIT allows national governments, international organizations and independent researchers to perform relevant analysis and promote efficient action on climate change.

Vertebrate Declines and the Sixth Mass Extinction | HHMI BioInteractive - 1 views

  •
The left panels show the absolute number of species whose populations have declined in each region; the right panels show the percentage of species that declined in each region. The top panels include all land vertebrates (amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals), whereas the bottom panels represent only bird species. Project or distribute the image to engage students. The downloadable Educator Materials PDF, which includes background information, graph interpretation and discussion questions, and the Student Handout, which includes the image and background information, have been remediated to comply with Section 508 of the National Rehabilitation Act for accessibility and can be used with screen readers.

Hydrogen Powered Cars - National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science - 1 views

  •
This problem-based case study guides students through a systematic exploration of the scientific issues surrounding the application and development of hydrogen fuel technology. A PowerPoint presentation introduces a New York Times article about the impact of our abundant natural gas resources on the cost of hydrogen fuel production. The article includes an Energy Department estimate that places the gasoline-cost equivalent of hydrogen fuel production, compression, and distribution at less than $4 per gallon, making it a viable option for the transportation sector. Students are then given primary literature articles and a worksheet to help them examine (1) the benefits and drawbacks of using hydrogen as a fuel in automobiles and trucks, (2) the current technological/engineering limitations of using hydrogen fuel, and (3) whether the pursuit of developing large-scale use of hydrogen-powered cars is the right direction for the country. Originally written for a second semester/second quarter general chemistry course, the case study is designed to illustrate the direct application of chemical thermodynamics and gas laws to the production and distribution of renewable fuels.
