This article talks about the ongoing religious conflict in Israel and Palestine. For decades they have been fighting over the land that holds there holy spaces. I wonder if this conflict will ever end.

Sadhana- I agree that peace will be very difficult to achieve. They both want different things for themselves and the conflict will take time to resolve.

Bailey- I agree that the conflicts end is to be questioned. The idea shown in the article that neither side is willing to compromise is one of the largest issues in my opinion. The holy sites are so close together which makes both sides want the land enough that they will go to extreme lengths to defend it.

This article discusses an Islamic terrorist group in Nigeria, known as Boko Haram, that opposes all elements of Western culture. They have launched numerous attacks on civilians, including kidnapping nearly 200 school girls.  What sparked this violence?  Will it ever stop?

The fact that it took four days for news of this attack to spread is a testament to how much location, specifically isolation, can affect the diffusion of news and information. In regards to the attack itself, I fail to see how this attack gets the group closer to achieving a goal. How does attacking a village, killing 33 people help to eliminate Western culture? This is just senseless killing.

The Pope signed a declaration that unified the once refuting religions, Christianity and Easter Orthodox. Will this unity set a precedent for other refuting religions? 

This article also shows that where there are boarders between countries there is usually fighting. ISIS is an Islamic group and because they have control over Syria and Iraq Christians have been forced to leave. This is similar with what happened with al Qaeda in those areas in the past. I hope that the unity will set a precedent for other religions.

When the Pope made this agreement with the Eastern Orthodox churches it would have assisted in ending religious conflict. Unlike some other religions that face conflict, these two religions are pretty similar, so this probably helped with ending their problems. In addition, the article I posted on the 19th was also about the Orthodox church, so it must be a prominent religion in Europe.

Territorial conflicts arose between the Burmese and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) because the Burmese want the KIA's land which is abundant in resources such as timber and hydropower. Is it possible for there to be peace between the two groups after all the violence and fighting that took place?

After reading your article, it doesn't seem like there will be peace between the two groups anytime soon. The Burmese are determined to steal the KIA's land, and it doesn't sound like the KIA is going to give up very easily in protecting their territory. As long as the Burmese continue to want the KIA's land and resources, then violence and wars are going to keep breaking out until one of them succeeds in stealing or protecting their territory.

I agree, I do not see peace between the two groups happening soon. The Burmese won't give up until they get the KIA's land, but the KIA will most definitely put up a fight. In my opinion, the Burmese don't have any right to the land. The KIA own it and therefore they should not have to share their resources.

There was conflict between the Taliban and the Westerns and those who support the western views, because of the different religious and ethnic views. For example westerns believe women should be educated just like men, but the Taliban is against women education. Why is a school in a home that teaches the same thing that a governmentally funded school less likely to be attacked, since the Taliban is still against those ideas?

I think that as long as the Taliban are in control there will always be violence between the Taliban and the Westerners. Women should be educated just like men, but as long as the Taliban have power, I do not think that will happen. The Taliban showed just how much they are against women getting an education when they shot Malala Yousafzai in the head on her way home from school. Schools in homes are less likely to be attacked than schools run by the government because they have the protection and support of the village and villagers. The Taliban might also target government run schools because they oppose the government.

The Taliban attack on this local bank has to do with religious values because they are willing to go to extreme measures,much like suicide bombings, as they are considered extremists. One question I have is why would a spokesman for the Taliban admit to the attack?

This article connects to the APHUG vocabulary term of monotheistic/monotheism, because the Taliban practices the Islamic religion, which worships one God, Allah, and a monotheistic religion is one that believes in only one God. This article could also connect with a past world event, regarding religious conflict, when the Crusades occurred, and Christians tried to conform others to Christianity.

Pretty sure they admitted to the attack because the Taliban is all about terror and it will actually help their organization not hurt it. They do this to let people know the extremes they'll go to to get their way. So any one, or thing, they don't agree with, they feel that the only solution is to blow them up, because of course that is the solution that gets the most results since they don't have the power of a large group of people. Everybody knows they are terrorists so it's not like anything has changed in peoples viewpoint of the Taliban. Meaning not much has changed in the military or political actions against them.

The killing of the Jewish rabbis during prayer adds into the mix of the Isreali-Palestinian conflict over what is considered the Holy Land and has inspired even more Jews to take action against the Palestinians. Is there a possibility for peace between these two peoples, or will they remain at odds with each other forever?

This article relates to the religion of Christianity and its belief of disapproval of gay marriage. Why will the magistrates not marry gay couples if it is legal, but even still it is not the magistrates who are gay, it is only the people they are marrying?

Putting personal beliefs aside, if North Carolina were to ban gay marriage like this for religious reasons, it would be a violation of the first amendment. There should not be a conflict if one side violates the rights of people.

In my own opinion, and this is something I fear will happen frequently, is that America is slowly becoming less of a country that has freedom OF religion and more of a country where there is freedom FROM religion. I think the magistrates should be able to practice their own beliefs even if there are some who disagree.

A Taliban group attacked a Pakistan school. Many children and teachers were killed. These groups were opposed because they had different views on education. What was the Taliban seeking to accomplish by this action and how did they justify it?

I'm asking the same question and I struggle to understand how these actions will solve the Taliban's problems. I don't get how killing the people they disagree with is the resolution they fall upon. Even other Muslims disagree with their way of dealing with these things.

Although most people see this as a big joke of a comedy, it may develop into a very serious issue. The movie is racist toward the North Koreans,and mocks their culture.

I agree that the movie mocks their culture, but due to the high firewall of North Korea, I do not see the uprising among their people, but rather their government. The government is drawing more attention to the issue.

I agree with Peyton. Do you think that the general public is aware of the movie and the controversy that it is bringing? If so, to what extent?

Religious conflicts are reaching new highs around the world as the government puts more restrictions on the faith of the people.  Why does the government restrict religions and what do the people or government gain from these restrictions?

This article is an example of territorial conflicts and religion, because the Russians believe the reason they are fighting is for religious purposes, and that their war in Ukraine is a holy war. How do the Ukrainians view the conflict and it's involvement in religion?

Ukraine has been part of Russia several times and has fought for their freedom from Russia in several wars. Currently, they have only been independent since 1991.

Adam brings up a good point, the history of the Ukraine and Russian conflict must be deeply rooted in historical conflict over the centuries. It would be neat to dig into the history, particularly how the ethnicity differs between the two countries.

Israel and Palestine have been in a religious conflict for many years, fighting for the same land. Do you think these events could have any impact in resolving the conflict?

This article discusses the violence between the Israelis and Palestinians who both think the other is in the wrong and that they should both be allowed to claim the land that is currently the state of Israel.

This article discusses an event that took place this Sunday in Sydney, Australia in a coffee house where Man Haron Monis held people hostage of which two had been killed.  This relates to our unit of religion as this conflict most likely relates to religion as there have been many concerns the Muslim community in Australia as they are a minority. Because of this, Muslims are trying to gain more territory as that is the goal for most universalizing religions in hopes to get more followers and spread the religion.  In relation to AP Human Geography, what might have caused Muslims to migrate to Australia even though it is not located near the hearth of where the religion was born?
