Melbourne Museum: Melbourne Museum - 0 views

  •
This is one of our stops during the Australia trip.  New technologies enable museums to create learning experiences for teenagers where they can authentically research, create, communicate and collaborate. Museum Victoria is using 21st century communication technologies to support students to investigate the past, both online and onsite. This session will outline how two programs developed by Museum Victoria, Making History and 600 million years in 60 seconds, are transforming museum learning for 21st century learners. The new programs enable teenagers to collaborate with their peers, communicate their ideas, create new digital media and make sense of the world around them. 600 million years in 60 seconds is an onsite education program at Melbourne Museum where exhibition objects are the learning focus and ICT tools are used by students to communicate their understanding of key concepts. Making History is an online resource where experts share historical knowledge and experience as well as an online gallery that can host student generated digital histories.

Why Is Measuring Learning So Difficult? A Video Conversation - EdTech Researcher - Educ... - 1 views

  •
"Here is a new video from EDUCAUSE with four experts and me addressing the question, "Why is measuring learning difficult?" Some good reflections on learning analytics, data, MOOCs, testing, pyschometrics, and more. I think the video has a nice balance of humility and optimism. Learning is much more complex than we can ever really pin down, but that doesn't mean that we can conduct meaningful assessments that lets students and mentors identify their learning experiences as, as Gardner Campbell says, find new doorways forward. "

New Rules - NYTimes.com - 3 views

  • The truth is, if you want a decent job that will lead to a decent life today you have to work harder, regularly reinvent yourself, obtain at least some form of postsecondary education, make sure that you’re engaged in lifelong learning and play by the rules. That’s not a bumper sticker, but we terribly mislead people by saying otherwise.
  • lifelong learning is the key to getting into, and staying in, the middle class.
  • “illiteracy will not be defined by those who cannot read and write, but by those who cannot learn and relearn.” Any form of standing still is deadly.

This article was published in Learning and Leading with Technology (lovingly referred to as L&L in Ed Tech world).  I try not to just list every new website I 'stumble upon' but only the ones that look as if they might actually be used by teachers.  Storify might just be one of the keepers.

Working as a Team for Student Success: The Middle to High School Transition - Transform... - 0 views

  • Bring the middle and high school administrators, teachers, and counselors together to learn about the courses, curriculum, and requirements of each school; to develop a mutual understanding about the young adolescent; and to create a smooth transition plan. Include input from students and parents. Include in the transition plan visits to the new school, counseling, and summer experiences that help students acclimate to their new schools.Plan activities that provide incoming students with social support, including opportunities to develop relationships with other incoming students and with older students.Provide an advisory program that assigns each student with an advisor or mentor — an adult advocate. Put significant, purposeful effort into engaging parents and families in the school. Parent and caregiver involvement tends to decrease in the middle grades and even more so during the transition to high school. Provide activities throughout the school year that involve students from both the middle and high schools. Peer mentoring programs that connect a ninth grader or older student with an incoming eighth grader are a popular way to accomplish this.
